Kate Middleton Leaves Hospital Following Abdominal Surgery: ‘She Is Making Good Progress’

Kate Middleton is recovering from surgery at home.

The Princess of Wales, 42, was discharged from hospital on Monday, 13 days after undergoing abdominal surgery, the palace said. Now she will continue her recovery at her home in Windsor, where she lives with her husband Prince William and their three children.

“The Princess of Wales has returned home to Windsor to continue her recovery from surgery. She is progressing well,” Kensington Palace said on Monday. “The Prince and Princess would like to say a huge thank you to the entire team at the London Clinic, especially the dedicated medical staff, for the care they have provided.

“The Wales family continues to be grateful for the well wishes they have received from around the world,” the statement said.

Kensington Palace announced on January 17 that Princess Kate had undergone “planned abdominal surgery” at a London clinic the previous day.

“The operation was successful, and he is expected to stay in the hospital for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue his recovery,” the statement said. “Based on current medical advice, he is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.”

“The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normalcy as possible for her children; and her desire to keep her personal medical information private,” the statement continued. “Kensington Palace will therefore only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’s progress when there is significant new information to share.”

“The Princess of Wales would like to apologize to anyone concerned about the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to returning to as many engagements as possible, as soon as possible,” they added.

PEOPLE understands the problem was not cancerous and that Prince William, 41, has put public duties on hold to support his wife during her recovery, as well as care for their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. He did not perform official duties while Princess Kate was in hospital, and is not expected to during the first days of her recovery at home.

Kate Middleton’s operation was a surprise for those close to the royal family

A source close to the royal household exclusively told PEOPLE in this week’s cover story that it is “sensible” for Princess Kate to take the necessary time to recover before returning to public duty.

“It’s a great example to the rest of us, because you’re often told to get back to work as soon as possible, which can be harmful. It’s good for all of us to see her take time, recover properly and then come back,” says the source. . “We can all learn from it.”

Although the source says the problem “sounds serious,” they expect her to “recover.”

“It sounds serious for the length of time [she’s taking]. But she is in good hands and will have a lot of care and support at home and is a fit young woman,” says the source. “I’m sure he’ll recover.”
