Kate Winslet Gets Candid About Acting with Her Older Kids: ‘Luckily, They’re Good’

Kate Winslet loves getting the chance to act with her children on screen.

In an interview with CARRIERthe Titanic actress, 48, opened up about how her work and family life have become intertwined since the star’s older children – son Joe, 21, and daughter Mia, 23 – started acting careers. In 2021, Joe and Mia starred alongside their mom in a completely improvised television show I’m Ruth.

“Luckily, they’re good,” she tells her children’s outlet. “It was normal [to act alongside them]. These are the children who tested [me] on [my] lines almost since they could read. They saw me terrified beforehand. They went through it with me.”

Winslet has a daughter, Mia, with ex-husband Jim Threapleton, and a son, Joe, with ex-husband Joe Mendes. She is also the mother of a son, Bear Blaze (10), whom she shares with her husband, Edward Abel Smith.

In May, the actress and her daughter sported similar looks at the 2023 BAFTA TV Awards, posing together on the carpet in chic black outfits.

Winslet opted for an asymmetrical black dress, while Mia chose a halter jumpsuit in black and ivory. Both had high heels, smokey eye shadow, earrings and pointy heels.

In 2017, the actress said Harper’s Bazaar that she “doesn’t have a cook or a driver or things like that” because she would rather take on those responsibilities herself.

“I would be so unhappy if I had those things and I wouldn’t feel like a real person anymore,” she said.

Winslet continued: “Just because I’m in a position to be able to have these things doesn’t mean I have to. It just wouldn’t be right for my family – I know my kids would absolutely hate it.”

“I want them to look back and remember my chicken soup and my packed lunches and that it was me on a school trip.”
