Katy Perry Calls Ariana Grande the 'Best Singer of Our Generation': 'I Don't Say That Lightly'

Katy Perry lends her big support to Ariana Grande’s stellar vocal skills.

Former American Idol the judge, 39, recalled the payment Positions singer, 30, a compliment years ago while talking to EXTRA recently about Season 22 winner Abi Carter.

“I think she was authentic, I think she was humble, I think she sang with an angelic frequency,” Perry began of Carter, noting her success throughout the season. “The way she sang her heart out and the crying and the crackling, it was just like, wow. This is a completely ‘second voice’.

“The voice is unlike anything I’ve heard in pop,” added the “Teenage Dream” singer. “The last time I said it, I said it about Ariana Grande when she went on Ellen [DeGeneres] Show. I said, ‘Oh, this girl is the best singer of our generation.’ So I don’t say that lightly.”

Grande appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show several times during the daytime talk show’s 19-season run. The two-time Grammy winner performed her song “Breathin” on it sweeter album live on television for the first time, along with her hit single “thank u, next”, during an appearance on the show in 2018.

Grande recently released her seventh studio album, Eternal sunshine, in January following the release of her single “yes, and?” Her album spent two weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. It also became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day of 2024 at the time of its release, the streaming platform announced in March.

Ariana Grande revealed why she didn’t plan to release a new album until 2025.

In an April TikTok video, Wicked star celebrated the one-month anniversary of her latest album by telling fans “thank you for your love”.

She also said it’s just the beginning of her new album era, teasing, “I can’t wait for all that’s yet to come in this eternal solar cycle (which has just begun and may it never end).”

Elsewhere in her Extra interview, Perry confirmed that she is preparing to release her next album following her emotional farewell to American Idol after seven seasons. During it, she also touched on upcoming music that does not yet have a release date Jimmy Kimmel Live! appearance in February when she revealed she was leaving Idol.

“I have some things planned for this year,” Perry teased the Kimmel host, “So it’s going to be a very, very exciting year … for all the girl pop stars!”
