Keanu Reeves Wrote Lance Reddick a Letter Crediting Him for Making People ‘Love John Wick’ (Exclusive)

Keanu Reeves has fond memories of his late friend and John Wick actor Lance Reddick.

Reeves, 59, received the inaugural Lance Reddick Legacy Award at the 2024 Saturn Awards held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel in Burbank, Calif., on Sunday night.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the ceremony, Reeves — who was also nominated for best actor at the movie award — recalled writing a letter to Reddick crediting the late star, who died suddenly last March at age 60, which made people “love John Wick”. ”

“He had such passion and fire for creativity, both for his craft and for art. I had the opportunity to work with him on four films over eight years, and during that time we got to know each other better,” the Matrix the star said while discussing his favorite memories with Reddick.

“But also, he had such grace, and he was funny. I mean, humorous. I don’t know. I think the favorite memories are… those are the scenes I had with him and the relationship between him and John Wick he had, Charon,” Reeves continued.

“I told him once… Well, I actually wrote him a letter and I said, ‘people love John Wick because Charon loves John Wick,'” he added of Reddick John Wick character; concierge at the Continental Hotel in New York.

The Constantine the actor continued, “Because that character loved John Wick, that made John Wick okay. And so when I got to act with him, we had that kind of affection.”

“The characters had such affection, and off-screen, we had such affection and we really enjoyed working on the film John Wick movies, our characters, starting to work with Chad [Stahelski] and on that series,” he added. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime project. I think he knew that, I knew that, and we just loved working together on it.”

The Saturn Awards, named after Reddick, which Reeves received on Sunday “symbolize and celebrate not only the talent of the performers, but also their character,” according to a press release.

After Reddick’s sudden death, Reeves and John Wick: Chapter 4 director Stahelski published a joint statement.

“We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by the loss of our beloved friend and colleague Lance Reddick. He was a consummate professional and a pleasure to work with,” they said.

They confirmed that they are consecrating themselves John Wick: Chapter 4which was released a week after Reddick’s death, to him.

“Our love and prayers are with his wife Stephanie, his children, family and friends. We dedicate the film to his loving memory. He will be greatly missed,” they added.
