Kerry Washington Reveals Why She and Her Husband Keep Their Children Out of the Public Eye (Exclusive)

Kerry Washington and husband Nnamdi Asomugha are protective of their three children.

In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE during the promotion Unclosed at the American Black Film Festival earlier this month, the actress, 47, opened up about raising her children — daughter Isabella, son Caleb and stepdaughter, whose name she’s keeping secret — out of the spotlight.

“I think from the beginning Nnamdi and I were really protective of our partnership and our relationship, because we wanted it to belong to us, and we found that we were able to define and create a relationship for ourselves and with each other outside of the public eye,” she says.

“And I think in many ways we just want to give our kids the same opportunity to define their own lives and enter the public space in their own way,” Washington continues.

Noting that the duo is “definitely not as protective as we were,” the Scandal adds the alum with a laugh, “They’re not, like, locked in a dungeon. They’re, you know, coming to the shoot, we’re going places, we’re doing things. We feel like we want to give them the agency to engage in public life the way they want to, because we chose to be athletes and artists, but we want to let them be children.”

The proud mom has spoken openly about raising three children in the past In style 2020 that while she’s “really, really careful” about keeping her kids out of the spotlight, she doesn’t necessarily want to keep them hidden.

“These are their lives. But it’s not about pulling a Rapunzel and hiding them in a castle from the world – we don’t want to do that,” she said. “I think any parent would want to prevent children from being in a situation that would make them feel afraid. I don’t want them to be taken advantage of, especially in this world of social media.”
