Kiefer Sutherland Mourns Designated Survivor Costar Adan Canto After His Death at 42: ‘Heartbroken’

Kiefer Sutherland mourns his death Designated as a survivor costar Adan Canto.

Canto died at the age of 42 after a private trip from appendicitis, according to The Wrap, which shared the sad news on Tuesday.

After the news of his death, many stars paid their respects, including Canto’s Designated as a survivor costar Sutherland, 57. The late actor played the role of Aaron Shore opposite Sutherland’s Tom Kirkman in the hit political thriller series.

“Seems like I’ve had to do too many posts like this lately, but I’m heartbroken over the loss of Adan Cant,” Sutherland wrote in his caption alongside a black-and-white photo of the two dressed in black suits.

The actor continued: “He was such a wonderful spirit.”

“As an actor, his drive to do well, to be great, and then to do better, was truly impressive and will be sorely missed,” Sutherland added in his caption. “I am also heartbroken for his wife Steph and his two young children. Adan, rest in peace.”

Italia Ricci, who played Emily Rhodes on the show, also wrote an emotional message as she shared a photo of her, Canto and Kala Penn on set.

“I was completely speechless. He was the strongest person I know in every sense of the word and I am very angry that this happened,” the 37-year-old actress wrote. “No one deserved this less than this sweet, brilliant, kind and gentle man.”

“F— cancer. F—,” added Ricci. “I am so sorry for everyone hurt by this devastating loss and I am even more heartbroken for his family. You will always be in my heart. 🤍.”

Meanwhile, Maggie Q, who played Hannah Wells, also shared a post on the carousel, which featured a snap of Cant, as well as snaps of them on Designated as a survivor.

“Beautiful friend… You are a person on a level that Hollywood did not even deserve. Kindness, warmth and generosity of spirit – total commitment to family and ALWAYS doing the right thing,” wrote Maggie Q, 44.

“No one has had your moral compass or come close,” the actress continued. “I do not understand this. Everyone who knew you was lucky. That is all I know. 💔.”

Penn, who played Seth Wright on the show, shared a post with more photos from the set, wrote in his caption: “Absolutely heartbreaking to lose Adan Cant. He was so genuine and warm, immensely talented; such a good person who was both calm and motivating. And funny. He was very, very funny.”

“I am so happy that I knew him. My heart goes out to Steph, the kids and the whole family,” added Penn (46).

Canto, who began his musical career in Mexico before becoming a Hollywood actor, died after a battle with appendicitis cancer, which he kept out of the public eye, according to Deadline.

“Adan had a depth of spirit that few truly knew. Those who saw her were forever changed,” Canto’s reps told UTA, Entertainment360 and Viewpoint, according to the release. “He will be greatly missed by many.”

Warner Bros. Television and FOX Entertainment also shared a statement saying they were “heartbroken” to learn of the actor’s death.

In addition to his role on Designated as a survivorCanto played Paul on NextArman Morales further Cleaning lady, Sunspot in X-Men: Days of Future Past and Rodrigo Lara Bonilla on Narcos. Behind the camera, he also directed and produced two short films: Before tomorrow (2014) and The Shot (2020).

Canto is survived by his wife, Stephanie Ann Canto, and their two young children: son Roman, 3½, and daughter Eva, 21 months.
