Kyle Richards Admits She Needed ‘Freedom and Some Space’ from Husband Mauricio Umansky: ‘It’s Been Rough’

Kyle Richards is open about needing “freedom” from husband Mauricio Umansky amid their marital woes.

In a sneak preview of the upcoming episode The Real Housewives of Beverly Hillswhich aired during Richards’ appearance on Living with Kelly and Mark on Friday, the 54-year-old reality star confided in her friend and co-star Dorit Kemsley that she needs some time for herself.

During a car ride together, Kemsley, 47, asked: “I mean, have you been thinking about anything lately? Do you think you wouldn’t end up with Mo?”

“What makes you think that?” Richard replied.

“What makes me think this way? Well, even just from Instagram, you know, I usually see you and Mo together, and it seemed like you were spending a lot of time away from each other,” Kemsley explained as Richards’ recent Instagram photos with friends were shown.

“I feel like I need some freedom – freedom and some space,” he said Halloween is ending replied the star.

Richards then told co-hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos that she saw it for the first time RHOBH review and she was “not thrilled with the questions” from Kemsley. She added: “I wasn’t ready to talk about those things.”

She noted that “it would have been better if she had asked me off camera.”

Richards admitted that “I wasn’t happy that particular day,” adding, “I feel like you could definitely see that.”

Richards and Umansky, 53, have been married since January 1996. The couple, who first met at a nightclub in 1994, have daughters Alexia, 27, Sophia, 23, and Portia, 15, as well as Farrah Brittany (b. Aldjufrie), 34, from Kyle’s first marriage to the former Guraish Aldjufrie.

In July, PEOPLE exclusively broke the news that Richards and Buying Beverly Hills the stars divorced after 27 years of marriage. At the time, the estranged couple denied rumors they were divorcing, but admitted he had had a “tough year” in a joint statement posted on Instagram.

In her interview with Ripa and Consuelos, the reality star gave an update on how she’s doing in the midst of her split.

“It was hard,” she said. “This is an unexplored area for me. It was hard. Fortunately, it was friendly. Heavy. My main concern is our daughters, who have been amazing, my four best friends. It’s hard.”

She said navigating a public split is difficult because fans “feel like they want to know all the answers” about what went wrong in the couple’s marriage. She added: “They also want to create their own story because we haven’t explained everything, which is impossible to do.”

After the split, Richards shared that she received messages from fans saying, “All our hopes and dreams are shattered” and “True love doesn’t exist.”

Ripa came to her defense in a message to fans, saying, “Let me just say this for you: Grow up. It’s not about you.”

Earlier this month, Umansky opened up to PEOPLE about overcoming difficult times in the couple’s long marriage. “We were married for 27 years,” he said Dancing with the stars said the competitor. “We have a bit of a difficult situation.”

He added that “life sometimes brings you different things” and “you have to get over it”. His marriage to Richards – the first 26 years of which were “amazing” – is no different.

“She and I are separated right now, but we’re not throwing in the towel,” he said. “We’re not saying it just to say it. We’re not actually throwing in the towel yet.”

As for what he wants fans and the public to know about the situation, Umansky said, “It’s very difficult to be in the public eye and have so much inquisition when you’re going through something difficult.”

He continued: “My wife is just being watched so intensely and it’s really not fair. She’s just a person. She’s an amazing person, she’s my best friend and she doesn’t deserve to be judged so much for everything she does.”
