Labour are out of their tiny minds if they think they can grow economy without the likes of Charlie Mullins

CHARLIE MULLINS, the world’s richest plumber, is selling his £12m London home as he prepares to leave the UK.

Mullins is also selling his cars, his investments and even closing his British bank account.

The working-class lad from London, who founded Pimlico Plumbers – which he sold for £145m in 2021 – is working towards having “no assets in the UK”.

“I won’t have any investments here,” he says. “I think my last tax bill is for January and I’m done with that.”

The self-made Mullins is leaving the country he loves before this Labor government starts to raid his hard-earned fortune.

He was particularly concerned by reports that chancellor Rachel Reeves will massively increase inheritance tax in next month’s budget.

“I’m selling my property because of inheritance tax,” he says.

“It’s an asset worth £12m — if I lose £6m I’m dead bread (Cockney slang for dead). The family would go crazy.”

Therein lies the crux of the problem with Labour’s desire to squeeze those with the “broadest shoulders”.

If you squeeze them hard enough, they can always afford to take their wealth elsewhere.

And when those who pay the most taxes can contribute so much, they end up contributing nothing.

Charlie has paid around £120 million in tax over the years.

It pays for many public services.

Labor makes a good point about driving economic growth.

But as she prepares for her tax budget next month, Chancellor Rachel Reeves must answer this question.

How does taking rich people like Charlie Mullins into exile help our country?

Charlie was born into real poverty in London’s Elephant And Castle.

He left school at 15 with no qualifications and started his plumbing business from an estate agent’s basement.

And comrades — without its valuable crop, there is no economic growth.

Charlie’s son Scott Mullins is launching a new business called WeFix — “the Harrods of the DIY world” — with Charlie’s eldest grandson Ashley as managing director.

Charlie himself is not on the payroll because “I’m not prepared to give the government a penny of my money.”

WeFix could be another Mullins family success story and will pay its taxes in the UK.

But Charlie predicts his son’s company could follow him into reluctant exile if Labor pushes ahead with what he sees as its fiercely anti-business agenda.

“None of this makes me happy,” says Charlie.

“I have always loved Britain and the prospect of leaving my country makes me very sad indeed.”

And that should make us all sad.

Because our future prosperity is built on the go-getters, the dreamers, the hard-working visionaries, the van drivers, the self-employed, the business people — big, small and everything in between — who start with nothing.

The problem is not that this government does not understand aspiration, ambition or self-improvement.

The problem is – they despise it.

But if Labor believes it can ever achieve economic growth without Charlie Mullins, then it has gone mad.

Kate’s inspirational shoot wasn’t just for the nation

I AM among those who found the film of Kate Middleton telling us she is cancer free incredibly touching.

Some experts disagree.

Kate Middleton does not have cancer

But she did not make a film for them.

I assume she made it for her three children.

The sense of relief in that was palpable.

Every shot told us that here was a woman who was grateful to be alive.

Boxing is hard on the brain

CHRIS EUBANK JR, the most careful of our boxers, says he feels the effect the sport is having on his brain.

“I definitely notice it,” says Chris.

“I forget things more than a few years ago. And that comes from getting punched in the head. That’s something I’m very aware of. I can literally feel it.”

Still, Eubank continues to fight – warming up in Riyadh next month after a 13-month layoff, then possible fights against old foes Billy Joe Saunders and Canelo Alvarez.

And boxing fans, like me, will continue to watch.

Although the physical toll is hard to justify and impossible to deny.

Boxing hasn’t changed.

What has changed is that in Chris Eubank Jr., the sport finally has a spokesperson who is honest enough to talk about the price being paid.

A throne of bad bronze

ONE big thing is wrong with the statue of our late Queen which has just been unveiled in Belfast.

She doesn’t look like her at all.

The “Prince Philip” figure accompanying the bronze statue also bears no resemblance to the late Duke of Edinburgh.

Even corgis look like they belong to another breed.

The Queen looks like Robin Williams playing Mrs. Doubtfire.

Prince Philip looks like Dr Who’s Matt Smith.

And corgis look like maybe rabid German shepherds.

Local mayor Neil Kelly describes the Belfast aberration as a “beautiful statue”.

I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but that’s ridiculous.

Why do they keep ordering these monstrosities?

In Kensington Gardens there is a statue of her as Princess Diana with her arms around two small children that looks like something out of a boring Michael Jackson video.

Nearby is the Diana Memorial Playground with a full-size pirate ship enjoyed by a million visitors each year.

Which monument better remembers Diana?

James set the tone

JAMES EARL JONES, who has died aged 93, had an amazing voice and an amazing life.

Raised by his grandparents in rural Mississippi, James was ridiculed by his schoolmates for his stutter and barely spoke a word for eight years.

Then the teacher encouraged him to read one of his poems to the class.

He became the school champion in public speaking.

And although James has had plenty of success as an actor, appearing in big hits like Conan The Barbarian and Coming To America, he’s best known for two iconic voice roles – Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in The Lion King.

James’ voice was incredibly commanding – rich, deep and capable of conveying both cosmic menace and unconditional love.

“His portrayal of Mufasa was absolute perfection, teaching a generation what fatherhood really is,” said Lion King co-director Rob Minkoff. “He lives in all of us.”

Especially Luke Skywalker.

Taylor twists

TAYLOR SWIFT faced social media fury when she hugged Brittany Mahomes at the US Open in New York.

Taylor’s boyfriend Travis Kelce and Brittany’s husband, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, both play for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Women are friends.

But Brittany supports Trump, while Taylor supports Kamala.

Are we really told that we can only be friends with those we agree with?

Some of us wouldn’t be without friends.

AMERICA innovates, China replicates, Europe regulates,” says Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Woof.

As a devastating analysis of the economic decline of the European Union, it will be little better.

Carlsey sings the ding dong song

TWO games into his tenure, new interim England manager Lee Carsley has an astonishing record.

Two wins, no goals conceded, and his lips tightly pursed during the singing of two national anthems.

Does it matter that the England coach refuses to sing the national anthem?

God Save The King is a statement of national pride and unity.

It seems strange and a bit sad when the England coach – of all people! – he doesn’t want to sing.

But this isn’t North Korea, folks, and singing the national anthem can never be mandatory.

At least Lee doesn’t whistle!
