Lexi Reed is thinking about losing an extra 100 pounds after being diagnosed with calciphylaxis
In a post on Instagram on Wednesday, the 32-year-old social media influencer explained how the diagnosis scared her, saying “[it] it completely turned my life upside down and made me question how strong I really am.”
Calciphylaxis is a rare, debilitating disease that the Mayo Clinic explains occurs when “calcium builds up in the small blood vessels of fat and skin tissue.” It can cause “blood clots, painful skin ulcers and can cause serious infections that can lead to death”.
“Since I personally had 30+ painful open wounds, and calciphylaxis has an over 80% mortality rate due to infection (the leading cause of death) – I was afraid I wouldn’t survive,” Reed wrote.
Last year, Reed underwent 59 weeks of treatment for painful wounds all over her body. But on Wednesday, she shared how she was able to overcome that “pain” and “fear.”
“I found that my strength to live and heal was stronger than focusing on the odds that were stacked against me, and I fought as hard as I could to survive one of the toughest battles of my life,” Reed continued.
