Lin-Manuel Miranda reveals why he hasn’t returned to the world Moana for the recently released sequel.
The Tony winner, 44, told PEOPLE at Mufasa: The Lion King premiere on Monday, December 9, to participate in Moana 2 was not entirely in the cards for him. Miranda wrote the music for the original 2016 film, which starred Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the demigod Maui.

Miranda added that he was “really proud” that composers Opetaia Foa’i, Mark Mancina, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear worked on the animated sequel.

During the performance at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon On December 3, Miranda said he felt pressure while writing the soundtrack because he wanted to write songs that lived up to the original The lion king the result, which he described as “every punch, no skip”. The official synopsis for the film reads: “Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, is determined to have his cub follow in his paw prints as the origins of his late father Mufasa are investigated.”
