Lisa Kudrow Addresses Rumors of a Romy and Michele's High School Reunion Sequel

During the January 7 episode The Drew Barrymore Showstar Lisa Kudrow, 61, revealed the origins of the beloved goofy characters when host (and fan) Drew Barrymore gushed about the 1997 cult classic.

Kudrow played the titular Michele in the film, opposite Romy Mire Sorvino. In their conversation, Barrymore, 49, asked Kudrow how the film came about.

“One of my favorite movies, I think about it a lot more than the movie,” Barrymore said during the segment. “It’s a world and I live in it every day and I certainly quote it every day of my life.”

“What?” Kudrow asked.

Romy and Michele!” exclaimed Barrymore enthusiastically. “Is it true and I may be wrong about this, but, all right, you’ll be the person who knows. Wasn’t that a movie at first?”

Kudrow went on to explain that the characters of Romy and Michele originally came from “a drama about giving up capital in LA” written by Robin Schiff, who would later write the film.

“So they had to audition backers for the play to see if they could even mount the play,” Kudrow recalled. “And they went to everything [acting] teachers, ‘Who do you recommend for the audition?’, so you know, I went.”
