BLACKPINK’s Lisa learned to speak different languages out of necessity.
In a new interview with Vanity Fairthe “Rockstar” singer (27) talked about growing up in Thailand and later learning to speak Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese in addition to her mother tongue.
“I mean, I don’t know if I’ve gotten that good!” Lisa exclaimed regarding her language skills. “I don’t think I have talent for languages, but I had to live in Korea, so I had to study.”

The star moved to South Korea as a young teenager to pursue music, and has since released music in Korean, English and Japanese as a member of BLACKPINK (along with Jennie, Rosé and Jisoo) and as a solo artist.
“I had to survive, I guess,” Lisa told the paper about why she became multilingual. “It was just common sense, like in order to get what I wanted, I had to learn and try to talk to local people, and I spent more and more time doing that.”
Learning Korean has also been helpful because he watches “a lot of K-dramas.”

“I’m currently watching one on Netflix called Love in the neighborhood. I just love the combination of the guy character and the girl character—they start out as friends! Like, they’ve been friends for 30 years,” Lisa said of the TV series.
“These things feel so real,” she added. “[K-dramas are] nothing too serious, so when I need to try to calm down, I watch them and it really helps.”
Lisa recently returned to Thailand to film the third season White lotusstarring Thidapon Sornsin. While in the country, she was surprised that the rest of the cast didn’t need much direction.

“I didn’t give them any advice, because they actually introduced me to some places! They said, ‘Oh, I was there yesterday, and it’s really good, you should go.’ It was kind of weird, but it was funny,” she said.
“I’m just happy that they enjoyed Thailand, you know, they enjoyed the Thai food, they enjoyed the culture and the weather because it’s very hot there,” she reflected. “The crew and the rest of the team started speaking a little bit of Thai and that really impressed me.”
During the production, Lisa also had frequent visitors. “My mom came over a few times and I could eat Thai food as much as I wanted,” she recalled.
“It was so nice, and I never spent so much time in Thailand after I left. I felt like I was at home, and that trip gave me a lot of energy,” she added.
