Louise Olsen News

The lovely environment where Louise Olsen’s paintbrush has produced an entirely new body of work is appropriately named Hidden Lake. Pollination, Louise’s first show as a painter, was inspired by the eucalypt-fringed calm, protected body of water in the New South Wales Southern Highlands. This was a big change for someone whose name has been associated with Dinosaur Designs for the last 35 years.

But an even more compelling narrative is hidden behind the body of work. In a new phase in Louise’s life, she and her renowned artist father John Olsen have been peacefully painting side by side in his tranquil country retreat. All the canvases were created during this time.

Their days now have a calm cadence. They retire to their studios at the ends of John’s house each morning after breakfast to start the day’s work. Louise’s studio is vast and airy with large doors that open out into the lake beyond. She frequently ventures there with her easel, canvas, and paint tubs to immerse herself in the ever-changing light and peaceful soundscape from the nearby ducks and birds.

John usually starts muttering something about a nice morning’s job meriting a glass of wine around noon. Dad is hilarious; he enjoys a glass of wine in the middle of the day, and occasionally, if the time is 11.30, I’ll ask, “Hey Dad, isn’t it a bit soon for a glass of wine?” However, he’ll respond, “Better to have one at eleven than eleven at one!” ‘And the glitter in his eye when I say, ‘Okay, let’s open a bottle of rosé,’” Louise chuckles sweetly.

This period has not only represented Louise’s rebirth as a painter—at least publicly, as she has painted her entire life—but it has also represented something of a reconciliation between John, Louise, and her brother Tim after a protracted and tumultuous relationship with their late stepmother Katharine. Louise explains that once her stepmother died at the end of 2016, “all these doors just opened up.”

Since then, the three of them have frequently spent weekends together, with Tim working on his impending biography and John and Louise painting, before putting their respective projects down for a home-cooked supper, a glass of wine, and endless talk.

Louise temporarily moved in with John during the recent period of forced seclusion before returning to her husband Stephen Ormandy and their daughter Camille in Sydney. “Dad is now 92 years old; he is remarkable for his age, but his body is ageing and he uses a walking frame despite being mentally sharp as a whip. He has enjoyed having us here to care for him and for us to have these beautiful conversations.

He has a staggering amount of knowledge about both history and art. He recalls visiting in Paris and having coffee with [American sculptor Alexander] Calder. I consider myself really fortunate that we have a similar passion.
