Nyong’o told her Instagram followers that she wanted to “publicly distance herself from someone I can no longer trust.”
Lupita Nyong’o announced on Instagram Thursday that she is splitting from boyfriend Selema Masekela, while urging her followers to “face our pain so we don’t spread it.”
In a lengthy note — which she shared via screen-captured slides, in the caption and again on her Instagram Story — Nyong’o, 40, began by acknowledging that “there are much more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who deeply suffer.” “At this time it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly distance myself from someone I can no longer trust,” the Oscar winner wrote. “I’m in the season of heartbreak over a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by fraud.”

Nyong’o wrote that she felt the need to “run into the shadows and hide” amid heartbreak, but said, “I remind myself that the amount of pain I feel is the measure of my capacity to love. And so, I choose to face the pain, gather the courage to know my life exactly as it is and I believe that this too will pass.”

“Let us face our pain so as not to spread it,” concluded the message, in which Nyong’o never mentioned Masekela by name. A representative for Masekela, a TV host and sports commentator, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment, nor did Nyong’o.
Her announcement comes a day after she was spotted at a Janelle Monae concert with friends Dawson’s Creek actor Joshua Jackson (45), whose wife Jodie Turner-Smith recently filed for divorce.
Nyong’o and Masekela publicly confirmed their relationship on Instagram in December 2022, although it is unclear when their relationship began.
Back in August, Nyong’o celebrated Masekela’s birthday on Instagram, calling him “Sunny Man ☀️.” At the time, Masekela responded in the comments calling himself “the luckiest man in the world”.
