The M5 was closed near Gloucester during rush hour following a police incident.
Motorists are now being urged to avoid the area, with some left stranded on the motorway.

CCTV cameras showed the interruption of traffic on the road
The accident happened on the southern carriageway between junctions 12 and 11a.
Emergency services participated in the incident, which is why the road was closed in both directions.
Northbound traffic has since reopened, while southbound lanes remain closed.
Gloucester Police said: “Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible.”
Drivers say they were trapped on the road for two hours.
One said: “I’m on my way to Birmingham to see a concert as I’m sure many are. When will this end.”
Another posted: “Bringing 2 elderly people home from hospital and been sitting here since 4.30am. I totally understand you are dealing with an incident and need time.”
The trapped traffic is now being released southbound.
Traffic delays are currently disrupting Gloucester, with bus operator Stagecoach saying all its services are experiencing delays.
Detour road
National Highways says motorists are advised to follow the turn symbol with a full circle on turn signs.
Exit the M5 southbound at J11A onto the A417.
Continue east on the A417 to the first exit at Brockworth.
Take exit 4 at the roundabout and head back west on the A417.
Continue west on the A417 to the A38 roundabout.
Join the A38 and continue south towards Quedgeley.
Rejoin the M5 southbound at J12.
