MacKenzie Porter Is in Her 'No Sleep Era' After Delivering First Baby: 'It's Been a Whirlwind' (Exclusive)

MacKenzie Porter isn’t sleeping much these days — but she’s happy.

During an interview with PEOPLE on the red carpet at the 2024 ACM Awards, the “About You” singer discussed welcoming her first baby, daughter Bowen James, with her husband, Nashville actor Jake Etheridge.

“He’s eight weeks old,” Porter said of her newborn, named Bowie. “It’s been such a whirlwind. Last night was the first night I got a good night’s sleep because it’s the first time I’ve been away from her. But she’s the sweetest little thing, I couldn’t be more in love.”

The “Pickup” artist, 34, also talked about the biggest adjustment — “sleeping.”

“She sleeps about three hours at a time and that’s it,” Porter said. “So, you know, that’s okay, I’m in the sleepless era, but it’ll get better one day.”

She also revealed why she is so excited about her daughter.

“I mean, I love fashion, so I probably like the clothes, but also the little moments where she’s my best friend,” Porter said. “Going to get my nails done with her or seeing my husband with her. It’s so sweet. Seeing what you’ve done is so amazing.”

Porter and her husband also have a new, guiding rule in their relationship since giving birth.

“Parenting-wise, it would be like we’re always on the same page — not that we’re raising our 8-week-old yet — but that’s our goal,” she said. “If one of us says, like, ‘Oh no, you can’t pick up your phone tonight,’ or ‘You have to go to bed,’ the other has to partner with the other parent.”

MacKenzie Porter got married! Country singer and Jake Etheridge’s fiancé elope: ‘Literally perfect’

Born on Thursday, March 14th at 7:21 am, baby Bowie weighed 7 lbs. and measured 17.5 inches long.

“On March 14, 2024 at 7:21 a.m. our lives changed completely. Our daughter took her first breath and she is now forever the reason we breathe,” the couple told PEOPLE. “Life just got a lot sweeter, cozier and sleepier in a matter of minutes. Mummy and daddy love you little Bowie girl.”

They added: “We left the hospital on March 16 and took the world’s slowest drive home trying to avoid every bump in the road as we had our most precious cargo strapped in the back seat.”

“The last four days have been filled with endless cuddles, 800 Google searches of ‘is ___ normal for a newborn’, a few tears of stress, but many more tears of joy. There’s an endless loop of images on the monitor checking to make sure he’s still breathing or just standing still above her cradle and looking into her perfect little squishy face,” they said.

They concluded that “we imagined this kind of love, but what we dreamed could never even touch the real thing.”

The 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards aired live on Prime Video from the Ford Center at The Star in Texas.
