Prince Andrew Finds Out How an ‘Hour of Television Can Change Everything’ in New Scoop Trailer

Prince Andrew actor Rufus Sewell sits down for that infamous BBC interview in 2019 in a new spoon trailer.

On Monday, Netflix released the first full-length teaser ahead of the film’s April 5 release, featuring Gillian Anderson as BBC News anchor Emily Maitlis opposite Sewell as the Duke of York.

A female voice says at the beginning of the clip: “An hour of television can change everything.”

Billie Piper, who plays Sam McAlister, then goes to extreme lengths to negotiate Prince Andrew’s booking in the footage amid news of his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“My job … is to book people we can’t just invite,” adds Piper’s McAlister.

At one point, Anderson says, “I’ve never been smuggled into a palace before” as she heads for Buckingham Palace in the backseat of a car. Then Sewell as Prince Andrew asks, “If I do the interview, the question is why you?” He was then told: “Sincerely, you know how people see you… ‘Randy Andy,'” referring to his tabloid nickname.

Later in the trailer, Romola Garai, plays News editor Esme Wren, warns: “Make no mistake, if we don’t get the tone right, the story won’t be him. It’ll be us,” as the interview trailer that went viral around the world ends, despite Sewell’s Prince Andrew declaring: “Everything went very good.”

The upcoming film is based on McAlister’s real-life memoir, Scoops: Behind the scenes of the BBC’s most shocking interviews. Netflix said the film will tell “the story of the women who provided the showpiece of the decade.”

The streaming service shared the first teaser for the film last month, a year after he announced it spoon was under construction. The drama was directed by Philip Martin, a British television director and screenwriter who worked on Crown.

“I want to put the audience in the fascinating sequence of events that led to the interview with Prince Andrew – to tell the story of the search for answers, in a world of speculation and different memories,” Martin said in a statement to Netflix. “It is a film about power, privilege and different perspectives and how – whether in glittering palaces or high-tech newsrooms – we judge what is true.”

In the interview, Prince Andrew spoke for the first time about his relationship with Epstein and allegations that he had sex with Virginia Roberts (now Virginia Giuffre) when she was 17. He insisted that he “doesn’t remember ever meeting” Giuffre. Maitlis mentioned the photo showing the royal with his arm around Giuffre’s waist, claiming, “I have absolutely no recollection of that photo ever being taken.”

In January 2022, Queen Elizabeth stripped her second son of his military titles and patronage amid Giuffre’s civil sexual assault lawsuit, which has since been settled. Prince Andrew has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
