In 2013, he contested from the Asani Assembly seat on the Congress ticket but lost the election to the BJP candidate Laxman Sangappa Savadi. In 2018, he contested and won the Asani Assembly seat as a Congress candidate, defeating the BJP candidate Laxman Sarwadi by 2,331 votes. After the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections, HD Kumaraswamy of JD(S) was sworn in as the chief minister with the support of INC, BSP, KPJP and independent MPs. As of July 2019, 13 INC MPs and 3 JD(S) MPs resigned from Parliament, leaving the government in the minority. In addition, one KPJP and one independent MP also withdrew their support for the government and supported the Bharatiya Janata Party. The rebel PLA left Bengaluru and camped at a resort in Mumbai. Following this, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy took a vote of confidence in the House, leading to the collapse of his government. Mahesh Kumathalli was one of the 15 MLAs who ousted the Kumaraswamy government by not supporting the confidence vote and switching allegiance to the BJP.
In July 2019, Karnataka Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar disqualified independent MP R Shankar and two Congress MPs Ramesh Jharkiholi and Mahesh Kumathalli. The Speaker announced that the MLAs were disqualified from being members of the 15th State Legislative Assembly under paragraph 2(1)(a) of the 10th Schedule to the Constitution and Article 191(a) of the Constitution of India. They will no longer serve as members of the Legislative Council until their terms expire on May 23, 2023. They were also banned from contesting by-elections. Thereafter, Kumar Talli and Ramesh Kumar moved the Supreme Court against their expulsion from Parliament under the anti-defection law, claiming that the Speaker’s decision was taken in “haste” at the behest of the Congress party. In November 2019, the Supreme Council confirmed the disqualification of 17 anti-government MPs from Karnataka but reversed the Speaker’s decision to ban them from contesting the polls until 2023. In December 2019, Kumartali contested and won the Asani Assembly seat as a BJP candidate in the by-elections. . In 2023, he represented the BJP in the Asani Assembly, but lost to Congress candidate Laxman Sarwadi by 76,122 votes.

Remarks to those affected by the floods
In 2021, Mahesh Kumathalli sparked controversy when a video of him making flippant remarks about people affected by floods went viral on social media. In a video clip, Kumartali asked a person in the Asani taluk flood-hit area to also give him “25 cents”. In another video, filmed at a hotel, Kumartali expressed his “difficult situation.” He told his followers that he was occupied with so many things that he wanted to throw away his phone and sleep peacefully because he was tired of calls from people affected by the floods. As a result, Kumartali received widespread criticism and later apologized for his remarks. He said he was recovering from COVID-19 at the time and didn’t want to hurt anyone.

- In 2019, Asani Youth Congress president Pramod Hiremani filed a habeas corpus petition in the Karnataka High Court against Asani MLA Mahesh Kumarta Mahesh Kumathalli is missing and may be illegally detained. MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi has been accused of unlawful imprisonment of Kumathalli. Accordingly, the High Court issued notices to the state government and Jarkiholi. Earlier, Shiremani had lodged a complaint with the Asani police, but he was told that Kumartali must be in Bengaluru, where a parliamentary meeting was being held. Hiremani searched for the MLA in Bengaluru but found none. Therefore, he filed a petition. Mahesh had allegedly informed the petitioner that Ramesh had been forcing him to resign as attorney general. At the time, Kumartali was one of the Congress MPs who did not attend parliamentary meetings and was believed to be linked to the BJP to switch allegiances. It is speculated that the MLAs came to Mumbai at the behest of the BJP, which was trying to lure them away to destabilize the coalition government in Karnataka.
- Although Kumartali successfully ousted the coalition government in 2019, his hometown Terasan and other villages in Asani taluk have installed large boards on the outskirts, barring him from entry.
