Profession
Malavika Krishna has been in the coffee business since her marriage to VG Siddhartha. She is a member of the CCD Board of Directors but is a non-executive board member. When VG Siddhartha narrated his idea for Cafe Coffee Day (CCD), she dismissed the idea; as Siddhartha wanted to sell a cup of coffee at INR 25 while the local coffee price was INR 5 per cup rupee. When Siddhartha revised the idea and planned to provide Internet access and coffee, she joined, and together they began planning to open the first CCD. She was present along with VG Siddhartha in 1996 when the first CCD outlet opened at Brigade Road, Bengaluru.
Once, she mentioned in an interview that during the construction of the first CCD store in Bangalore, they (Malavika and Siddhartha) would look out the window and play a game of guessing who would enter their cafe. While VG Siddhartha is an active board member, Malavika has been responsible for the day-to-day operations of CCD since 2008.
Husband died
Her husband VG Siddhartha went missing on July 29, 2019. He was traveling to Sakleshpur from Bangalore with his driver. Midway, he asked his driver to drive to Chikmachalur. As they approached Chikmachalur, he asked the driver to stop near a bridge. He got out of the car and asked the driver to drive to the bridge and wait for him. After a while, he came over.
His driver waited at the bridge for an hour and when he didn’t come back, he called him, but his phone was switched off. The driver returned to where he left to look for him. When he could not find him, he called Malavika’s elder son and informed him about the incident, after which he rushed to the nearest police station and registered an FIR. The police began a search operation on July 30, 2019. At 7:43 am on July 31, 2019, the police found a body resembling VG Siddharth in the Neravati River. His family was summoned to identify the body. Malavika was also one of the on-site verification personnel.
After verification and paperwork were completed, his body was taken to his office in Chikmachlur. His body was left there for people to pay their respects. Malavika decided that Siddhartha’s funeral would be held at Siddhartha’s father’s coffee estate in Beirut Taluk; this was where Siddhartha decided to become an entrepreneur.
