Mallory McMorrow Promises Hate Won't Win: See the Cover of Her New Book (Exclusive)

Sen. Mallory McMorrow documents her journey into politics in her debut book.

PEOPLE can exclusively reveal the cover of McMorrow’s new book, Hate Won’t Win: Find your power and leave this place better than we found itwhich is coming from Hachette Book Group next spring. The book is “a step-by-step guide for anyone fed up with the divisiveness of American politics,” according to the official description.

McMorrow didn’t start out with the goal of becoming a politician. In fact, she worked in product design and advertising for years. But things changed when she woke up the day after the 2016 election and “Googled ‘how to run,'” she told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement.

She has since become a staple in the United States political sphere and currently serves as Senate Majority Whip and is in her second term in the Michigan Senate.

“I learned the ins and outs of management and saw what works and what doesn’t in terms of how anyone can effectively advocate for change,” she explains.

“But I’ve also found myself at the forefront of the ugliest of our present moment: watching armed gunmen tower over my head in the Senate chambers, battling a global pandemic and the rise of conspiracy theories and political violence, sexual harassment, misogyny and personal defamation so ugly and baseless that the speech I gave in response went viral and made me a household name overnight,” she says.

In 2022, a fundraising email Senator Lana Theis sent to supporters went viral. He accused McMorrow of being a sexual predator who wants young children to feel “responsible for slavery.” The email said “our children are under attack in our schools” for teaching critical race theory.

Theis’ email contained no evidence of such practices in her state’s classrooms or the allegations against McMorrow, who later said in a speech in the Michigan Senate that she did not expect her name to be associated with the unsubstantiated message.

“I sat on it for a while, wondering why me,” McMorrow said. “And then I realized—because I’m the biggest threat to your hollow, hateful agenda.”

Within two days, the video of McMorrow’s speech had been viewed on Twitter, now X, more than 10 million times.

Reflecting on today’s controversy, McMorrow says she “used that moment to turn hate on its head, raise millions of dollars to support other candidates running for our state legislature.” Since then, she has “met thousands of people across the country who want to get involved and make a difference, but who have no idea where to start.”

“This book is the culmination of everything—how I got here, what I’ve learned, and a step-by-step guide for everyone on how to find your own voice, find your people, get involved, and make a real difference to create the community and future we want to see.”
