Mamata Banerjee is an Indian politician and the founder of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC or TMC). She is the eighth chief minister of West Bengal and the first woman to hold the chief ministership in the state. Banerjee has served as a federal cabinet minister for many times and became the chief minister of West Bengal for the first time in 2011.

Mamata Banerjee was born on January 5, 1955 in Kolkata (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India, to a Bengali Brahmin family (age as of 2023: 69 years old).
When she was 17, her father Promirswar Banerjee died due to lack of treatment. She completed her high school education from Deshbandhu Sishu Sikshalay, Kolkata. She received her bachelor’s degree from Jogamaya Devi College. She was very interested in law and obtained her degree from Jogesh Chandra Choudhury Law School, University of Calcutta in 1982. She later earned a master’s degree in Islamic history from the University of Calcutta. She received her PhD (D.A.) from Institute of Technology, Kalinga, Odisha.
While studying at Jogamaya Devi College, she entered politics and founded the Chhatra Parishad Unions, the student wing of the Indian National Congress.

Banerjee was born to Promirswar Banerjee and Gayatri Devi. Her mother died in 2011 at the age of 81.
She has six brothers: Amit Banerjee, Ajit Banerjee, Kali Banerjee, Babun Banerjee, Ganesh Banerjee and Samir Banerjee . She has no sister.
Amit Banerjee’s son Abhishek Banerjee is her nephew. Abhishek is also a TMC politician and was a member of the 16th Lok Sabha from Diamond Harbor constituency

Profession
Banerjee began her political career at a very young age as a Congress politician. From 1976 to 1980, she served as the general secretary of Mahila Congress (I) in West Bengal. In the 1984 Lok Sabha elections, she defeated veteran leader Somnath Chatterjee from Jadavpur Assembly constituency in West Bengal, becoming the youngest member ever to be elected.
In the 1980s, she also became the general secretary of the Indian Youth Congress. In the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, she lost the constituency. However, in the 1991 Assembly elections, she won from Kolkata South constituency and retained her position till 2009. In 1991, she became the federal minister of state for human resource development, youth affairs and sports, and women and child development in the government. PV Narasimha Rao. Before the 2009 general election, she joined the United Progressive Alliance and won her seat in the election. Banerjee is serving as Railway Minister for the second time. In the 2010 municipal elections in West Bengal, her party TMC won the Kolkata Municipal Corporation with 62 seats. In the 2011 West Bengal elections, her party ended the 34-year rule of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the state. Mamata Banerjee becomes the Chief Minister of West Bengal, the first female Chief Minister of the state. In September 2012, she withdrew her support for the Indian National Congress.
In 2016, her party won a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections, and she became chief minister for the second time. In the 2021 West Bengal elections, she lost the Nandigram seat to Shuvendu Adhikari of the BJP by a margin of 1,763 votes. On May 5, 2021, she was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the third consecutive time.
On February 2, 2022, she was re-elected as president of the Trinamool Congress party unopposed.

However, the Calcutta High Court overturned the decision and labeled it as “appeasing minorities”.
- The rainbow is called “Ramdhonu” in Bengali which means the bow of Lord Ram. But in January 2017, the word “Ramdhonu” was replaced by “Rongdhonu”, which means “Bow of Colors”. It has caused controversy among the country’s hard-liners, with some seeing it as an attempt to appease a minority.
