She may have played some questionable motherly figures on screen, but in real life, Marcia Gay Harden is a devoted mom to her three children, Eulala, Hudson and Julitta.
The The mystical river the actress welcomed her three children with her ex-husband Thaddaeus Scheel. The former couple married in 1996, and Eulala was born just a few years later, in 1998. In 2004, they had twins Hudson and Julitta. After almost 15 years of marriage, the Oscar winner filed for divorce in 2012.
Harden admitted on PEOPLE Now in 2019, somewhat protective of her children. I’m not a super restrictive type of parent, said the actress. “I want them to be free to make their own mistakes. But I want to guide their mistakes a little bit.”
During a 2023 telethon to raise money to fight anti-LGBTQ legislation, Harden opened up about her children’s identity and pride in them.
“All my children are queer,” said the actress. “My oldest child is non-binary. My son is gay. My youngest is fluid. And you know, they are my children and they teach me every day.”
In February 2024, Harden told PEOPLE that she was trying to find balance in her parenting.
“You’d have to ask them what I’m like as a parent. Everyone will say something different. Back in the day they would say ‘strictly’. Everyone would say ‘practically’ and they wouldn’t be wrong,” she said. “I want to be involved in their life.”

Harden’s eldest child, Eulala Grace, was born on September 23, 1998, and has largely stayed out of the spotlight, except for the occasional public outing.
While Eulala keeps a low profile, Harden’s eldest child made a brief appearance on screen as a child, appearing in Pollock 2000 along with Harden as well Whip It and workaholics.
In 2020, Harden shared with PEOPLE Now that Eulala graduated from Bennington College, a liberal arts college in Vermont. It is not clear what exactly Eulala studied, but the actress congratulated her child on Instagram for continuing to work on sculptures, ceramics and film even during the pandemic. However, Harden said Eulala was “heartbroken” that she didn’t have a degree.

“It’s less about walking on stage and really more about when you graduate as an art student, you have a show,” she told PEOPLE Now. “And you show what you do. Then you can negotiate with people and museums.”
To deal with that disappointment, Harden said Eulala brought seven of her fellow students to the family’s house in the Catskills, where they finished their last year of school together.
“They created an artistic commune,” she said. “It was so cool … They have an edge to them. They have street cred, this graduating class, because they’ve been through something that we could never have imagined.”

On April 22, 2004, Harden gave birth to twins Hudson Harden and Julitta Dee in New York. The actress said in an interview for 2020 The Kelly Clarkson Show that her son discovered he was gay in the seventh grade.
I just thought it was the bravest thing ever, Harden told Clarkson via Zoom.
Like his older sibling, Hudson usually keeps a low profile, but he had a brief beauty vlogging moment in 2018 when he posted a YouTube video of himself giving his mom a red-carpet-ready makeover.
According to his Instagram bio, Hudson graduated from the Interlochen Center for the Arts in 2022. He began attending the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland — a school of dance, drama, music, production and film — in Glasgow shortly after graduation.

To honor Hudson’s move to the UK, Harden took to Instagram to share a congratulatory post for her son in 2022.
“I spent 18 years listening to him sing, hum, babble, sing, hum, babble,” she wrote in the caption alongside several photos of him and Eulala exploring Scotland. “It’s a little quiet now!! … I’m so proud of Huddie. You miss the noise. You miss YOU.”

Along with Hudson, Harden and Thaddaeus also had a daughter, Julitta Dee, on April 22, 2004. The actress described her younger daughter, 2023, as “liquid.”
Of Harden’s three children, Julitta seems to be the most frequent attendee of her mom’s red carpet events. The actress shared on her Instagram that they attended the 2023 Tony Awards together, and the couple also walked the red carpet together at the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys.
It seems that Julitta also received the acting gene. In 2018, she landed a recurring role in the drama I’m kiddingwhich starred Jim Carrey and ran for two seasons. She was also a guest on Trophy wifecomedy series in which her mother had a regular role.
During the 2020 pandemic, Harden said PEOPLE Now that the family threw a birthday party from the car for the twins’ 16th birthday. Although the restrictions prevented Julitta and Hudson from getting their licenses, the actress said her children didn’t resist the rules too much.

“What I’ve found about both of my twins is that they’re actually far more capable of surrendering and accepting what they have no control over than I am,” she said.
In February 2024, Harden told PEOPLE about her passion for mothering Julitta and her siblings.
“Having a child is literally going to be the biggest master class anyone will ever have… I’ve learned to accept each of them for the beauty that they are and let go of expectations,” she said. “I’ve learned that at the end of the day, it’s their life. I want them to be happy in it.”
