Things are going well for Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd after their divorce.
The Grammy winner, 34, appeared on the Sept. 25 episode of Dax Shepard Armchair expert podcast and spoke candidly about the dynamic between her and Hurd, 37, with whom she shares 4-year-old son Hayes Andrew.
“I mean, we agree, but the co-parenting thing is going well and we’re doing our best this way, but it’s still pretty fresh,” Morris said, adding that he also feels “deeply creative” since getting divorced and leaving the country genre .
There is a lot to write about, but also about freedom, she said. (Morris and Hurd finalized their divorce in January 2024 after five years of marriage.)

In addition to making music, Morris has been busy touring — and while she loves performing, work-life balance is becoming an increasing priority for her. “I don’t want to be on tour 280 days a year. Like, I want to be at home. I want to be a good mom and also have a social life because then I really have nothing to write about,” she said.
“If I don’t go through the s—show dates, there’s no album. The well has to be filled that way,” added Morris, who came out publicly as bisexual in June. Earlier this month, PEOPLE learned that she recently dated Netflix’s Justin Assad A perfect matchbut their relationship status is unclear.

Elsewhere during the interview, Morris opened up about her decision to release a particular track on her latest EP, Interruptionknowing that fans will relate his lyrics to her real life.
“I had to make a decision about the song at the end called ‘This is How a Woman Leaves,’ and I was a little nervous just to put that out there. Not because it’s untrue to me, but because I’m not in the business of being mean,” she explained. . “I never write a song for somebody, like, fuck, or hurt somebody.”

While Morris admitted he has written about “people who despised me” in the past, Hurd is not one of them. “But at the end of the day, I can’t control people’s perception of my song that they hear. S [‘This Is How a Woman Leaves’]I could imagine the healing that would happen live,” she added.
She continued, “If I’m writing a song and I can already imagine it live and just cry with strangers, when I go to shows and I’m just a patron in the crowd, the most special thing is just connecting with a crowd of strangers.”
