News from Marianne Lumb
A professional chef from Leicestershire will show off her culinary skills on the BBC’s Great British Menu this week. One of the four chefs vying to represent Central England is Marianne Lumb, who is from Long Clawson, near Melton Mowbray.
After a four year absence, Marianne returns to the kitchen of Great British Menu. She previously participated in heat 13 and advanced to the final round of the competition, but she claims that this time she is more motivated than ever to win the crown.
Paddington Bear’s 65th birthday in 2023 serves as the inspiration for this year’s Great British Menu, which pays tribute to the country’s achievements in the animation and illustration industries. At the banquet held at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, chefs from across the UK, divided into eight geographical zones or nations, compete to create a meal.
The famous palace, immortalized by Raymond Briggs in his favorite tale ‘The Snowman’, is also the first location of the Brighton School of Art, Britain’s oldest art school. The chefs took it upon themselves to create delicious dishes that respected illustration and animation. Plates already served include a Soup Dragon appetizer in homage to the classic stop motion animation The Clangers and a delicious Venison Crocodile Boot for the main course recreating Quentin Blake’s illustration of an edible crocodile for Roald’s 1979 cookbook. Dahl.
This week’s programmes, which start tonight, Tuesday 21 March, focus on chefs from central England. Before one of the four chefs is fired, the other three will prepare their appetizers and fish dishes.
Before another one is eliminated, the three surviving chefs will cook their main courses and desserts on Wednesday. The chef who will represent the Midlands in the final will be announced on Thursday. Chef Andi Oliver hosts the show and the judges are chef Tom Kerridge, restaurateur Nisha Katona and comedian and foodie Ed Gamble.
A runner-up on the 2009 season of MasterChef: The Professionals, Marianne is passionate about wild and unusual ingredients like English truffles and British game. Viewers will be able to see her reinvent the Melton Mowbray pork pie in the comedy series Great British Menu, which takes inspiration from The Magic Roundabout and the cult British animation Private Eye.
