Mariyam Shiuna is a Maldivian politician and journalist. In January 2024, Maryam triggered a diplomatic spat between India and the Maldives after she made derogatory remarks against Modi after posting a video of Prime Minister Modi on a beach in Lakshadweep. After Shona’s remarks, the Maldivian government suspended her and two other ministers in Mohammad Muizhu’s government from their cabinet ministerial posts for making indecent remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India.

In January 2024, Mariyam Shiuna made inappropriate remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he posted photos and videos from her trip to Lakshadweep Islands . Sinua used words like “clown” and “Israeli puppet” against Modi in her tweets, which she later deleted.

Akshay Kumar, Sachin Tendulkar, Akash Chopra and many other Indian celebrities asked Indians to cancel their trips to the Maldives and choose domestic destinations instead. Subsequently, more than 8,000 Indian flights to the Maldives Hotel reservations and more than 2,500 air tickets were cancelled. Mohamed Nasheed, the first democratically elected president of the Maldives, called her comments “shocking”. President Mohamed Muizou’s government also distanced itself from Mariam’s comments, saying they were personal and did not represent the Maldives government. it says,
The government believes that freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner and must not spread hatred, negativity or hinder the close relations between the Maldives and its international partners. “
The government also assured strict action against those who make such indecent remarks. Subsequently, Mariyam Shinua, Malsha Shareef and Mahzoom Majid were suspended by the Maldives government for making inappropriate remarks against Prime Minister Modi and India. Ibrahim Khalil, Minister of the President’s Office of the Maldives, also revealed the same situation in an interview with the media. He said:
