Wahlberg stars as an athlete who forms an unexpected bond with a dog in a film based on a true story
Mark Wahlberg has opened up about the injury he faced while filming his new movie, Arthur the king.
In an interview with Party tonight at a special pet adoption event and fan screening of the film in Los Angeles on Monday, the 52-year-old actor revealed he tore his meniscus on the first day of filming the adventure drama.
“Unfortunately, I tore my meniscus on the first day, so all my training went out the window,” Wahlberg told the paper about the incident. “Then it’s really just about getting through it.”
“So I had to understand the suffering a little more than I wanted to,” he added.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the meniscus is a C-shaped piece of tough, rubbery cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between the lower leg and the thigh bone. It can tear if you suddenly twist your knee while bearing weight on it.
The actor added that after the incident he went to a doctor who told him that the injury could get worse if he didn’t stop filming.
“I just felt like, you know, it took a long time to get the movie off the ground, and we were in the middle of COVID, and if I had shut it down, I don’t know if we would have gotten it running again,” he recalled. “So I just toughened up a little bit and found different ways to get through.”
Going into filming, Wahlberg added that his wife, Rhea Durham, was concerned about the safety of some of the film’s more intense scenes. For one scene in particular, Wahlberg shared how his wife was not happy when he rode the zip line.
“She doesn’t think I should do things that are too extreme,” he said. “I mean, I don’t do any Tom Cruise stuff. But I do enough where it’s like, ‘Yeah, you don’t want to put yourself in danger.’

Earlier this month, the actor opened up to PEOPLE about his health routine and how important rest is to him.
Over the years, the actor’s early morning workouts have become legendary, as he often starts at 4am. However, he revealed to PEOPLE at the LIV Golf Las Vegas Big Game Party that sometimes even he doesn’t want to practice at all.

“I feel it more often than you think,” Wahlberg told PEOPLE when asked if he ever feels like he’s not working out.
But, he says, he usually starts his day sitting in a tub of 35-degree water and ice, known as a cold plunge, and that puts him in a good mood.
“I say, ‘Okay, I’m awake, I’m alive.’ We’re going right after that,” Wahlberg explained. “So I just go and do the work.”
Wahlberg often posts videos of his workouts on social media – earlier this week the actor revealed his impressive abs in an Instagram video showing him lifting his shirt – but admits rest and recovery are “equally important”.
Arthur the king will be released in theaters on March 15.
