Welcome to The Blueprint, where we take apart the celebrity looks we want to wear right now and recreate them, piece by piece.
After interviewing Martha Stewart earlier this year, I gained a greater appreciation for everything she does, says, and wears—and it’s almost like she heard me cleaning out my closet over the weekend.
Just as I was about to give away the old denim jacket, the 83-year-old stepped out in one on the same day, September 1st. The most important fall layer is the one I haven’t worn in years, so I almost gave mine away. But with each new celebrity sighting — Mandy Moore, Julianne Moore and Taylor Swift — I’m tempted to stick it out for another season.
And while she was serious above, Stewart was having fun at the bottom of her ‘fit’. She styled her denim jacket with a pair of gold metallic bottoms, a style she’s worn before. She also left her Skechers sneakers in the car (wink, wink!), and instead put on boots that look like suede.

Okay, maybe I’ll donate my denim jacket after all. The truth is, I don’t like the way mine fits, and I like the way this one from Nordstrom Rack looks. It’s roomy in all the right places (better known as the chest and arms), but it’s about the same length as Stewart’s. But for a darker wash, I’d go for this one from Wrangler, which is “comfortable and soft for a denim jacket,” according to one customer. And since leopard and cheetah prints are neutrals in my house, I wouldn’t mind one with a patterned collar.

A glint of gold or silver can make a modest outfit shine a little brighter, and to do so, it doesn’t have to contain anything flashy, like sequins or rhinestones mirroring a disco ball. These under-$100 pants come in a muted metallic shade that’s not so obviously gold — some might even mistake them for khaki. Plus, the faux leather material looks nice and chunky, while the flared legs parallel the pair that have personally moved my style needle forward for the past three autumns.

The boots aren’t revolutionary, but they’ll take a place in my closet: I need a block heel to keep from toppling over, and one that’s not too high. Also, I’m thrilled about the time I’ll save by not tucking my legs into a pair of knee-high boots. For that reason alone, I’ll be jumping around in boots this fall.
And brushed leather jackets, shoes and accessories are also already starting to sweep celebrities off their feet, so it only seems fitting to get in on the trend.
