Mary J. Blige Reflects on 'Dream' Power Book II: Ghost Role That 'Reminded Me of My Mom' Following Monet's Emotional Death

Mary J. Blige says goodbye to her beloved Book of Power II: Spirit the character of Monet.

The character of the “Family Affair” singer was the matriarch of the Tejada family for all four seasons Power spinoff and in the penultimate episode Spiritshe met a gruesome death to save her children.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Blige, 53, says, “It was a dream to join Power family and play a character like Monet Tejada. This character allowed me to portray a woman I know well on screen.”

“I knew it was happening and everything, but I actually shed a tear,” he admits. “That scene, I don’t know why, I was like, bro, we really got rid of Monet? That’s crazy. And then it was the way she came out, you know? Like she came out trying to protect her kids.”

“She came out with two guns, she doesn’t care, she threw her life right out there, like you’re not going to kill my babies. Like, you all can take me but you’re not going to take my babies,” Rainey Jr., 24, said.

“She’s a gangster. She came out as a G, I can’t lie. But I definitely shed a tear.”
