Mary Nicosia and her husband, Dr. Nicholas Nicosia, were recently fined for hosting an allegedly racist fake June 16 party on July 7 at their 9,000-square-foot home on East Avenue. Yard decorations included June 16-themed posters and cardboard cutouts of President Donald Trump, while the menu included Kentucky Fried Chicken and Hennessy Cognac. After Jerrod Jones, an African-American firefighter, filed a lawsuit against the city and the fire department after his supervisor, Capt. Jeffrey Krywy, escorted him to the event while on duty, the party was widely condemned.
Krywy was due to be fired for his actions, but he resigned before the investigation could be completed. The police department also said that all officers who attended the celebration will be disciplined. Amid the growing issue, Mary Nicosia and her husband held a news conference at the Hilton Garden Inn in Pittsford to clarify their identities. Although the former defended the couple, claiming the party was not intended to be racist, Nicosia admitted she had made racist comments on Twitter in the past.
Everything you need to know about Mary Nicosia.
Mary Nicosia is a real estate agent and former vice president of development for The Landmark Society of Western New York. She is the wife of Dr. Nicholas Nicosia, vice president of Highland Hospital’s board of directors and team dentist for the Rochester Americans hockey club. The Nicosias are one of the most famous couples in Rochester and are well known for their high status. The couple paid $650,000 for their East Avenue home and moved there in 2000, according to property records.
In a letter to the editor of the Democrat and Chronicle more than a year later, Mary Nicosia condemned the situation in the city. She stated:
“My husband and I chose to raise our children in Rochester while also renovating a historic property on East Avenue.” We appreciate city life and all it has to offer, but our friends in suburban development think we’re crazy.”
Nicosia continued:
“Crime, the poor state of the education system, taxation, and now the planned tax increase.” “I’m beginning to believe our friends are right.”
Mary Nicosia and her husband have apparently been involved in a number of powerful organizations and have proven their support for professional sports teams as well as political initiatives. According to reports, the couple often donated to both Democratic and Republican politicians.
They also gave $1,131 to Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign and $497 to the political action group Make America Great Again, according to public records. They also contributed to the campaigns of Republican state Sen. Len Morello and Republican City Council candidate Marcus C. Williams.
More recently, the couple made headlines for hosting a fake June 16 party at their home, sparking widespread condemnation for being racially insensitive. A short time later, it was discovered that Nicosia had a Twitter account and had sent multiple racist tweets on the platform.
After the riot, the Landmark Society of Western New York deleted Mary Nicosia’s biography from its website and suspended her from her position. According to the official statement of the organization:
“We were appalled and horrified to read the very serious allegations about a party held at a property in Nicosia in July… The allegations, as noted, are incompatible with the core beliefs of our organization.”
Meanwhile, political leaders such as Mayor Malik Evans and Rachel Barnhart said Nicosia and her husband’s donations to their funds would be returned. Republican La’Ron Singletary said he would no longer accept contributions from the two.
After the Juneteenth party scandal, Mary Nicosia held a press conference with her husband to deny accusations that her gathering was racially insensitive:
“I am here to defend myself against baseless accusations of racism.”
On the other hand, the mother of two admitted that she used the social network account to post racist comments on Twitter:
“Frankly speaking, I have a parody Twitter account that runs under the guise of a character – and I’ve made overtly racist statements under that identity.”
Mary Nicosia expanded on her points, saying:
“That’s how Twitter culture works.” That’s part of its appeal. I don’t want to say charm, but it allows you to be someone you’re not in terms of personality.”
Afterwards, she apologized to the African-American community and everyone else she offended with her behavior:
“I would also like to apologize to the African-American community and other individuals in the community that I may have hurt or offended by doing what I did on Twitter for these statements.”
The lady went on to say that she grew up in a “very diverse neighborhood” in East Cleveland and was “not a racist person.” However, she was held responsible for her actions:
“I consider myself responsible. I’m embarrassed. It wasn’t easy for me to come here and tell you this. And please accept my sincere apologies.”
Nicosia also said she had considered her behavior and decided to distance herself from her racist online persona:
“During the previous 12 busy days, I learned a lot.” And I’ve learned that posting a statement on Twitter behind a pseudonym is just as inappropriate and painful as directly speaking to someone in a room. And I believe it’s a lesson learned for me and I believe others could benefit from it.”
Although Mary Nicosia did not reveal the name of her Twitter account, many people speculated that she went by @HoHoHomeBoyRoc and had various nicknames such as “Colonel Nathaniel Sanders” with a profile photo of “Smilin’ Sam from Alabama” The Salted Peanut Man.”
According to reports, the Twitter account has been active since November 2021 and mocks African-Americans online, including politicians, elected officials and journalists, often adopting black vernacular English.
Twitter scolds Mary Nicosia for racist scandal
Several social media users were upset with Mary Nicosia’s mean Twitter account, which she claimed was a racially insensitive June Fool’s joke. Many people took to Twitter to protest her behavior online, as well as the alleged racially insensitive event:

Mary Nicosia’s lawyer, Corey Hogan, admitted that his client’s Twitter account was “racist, wrong and ugly”, but argued that the lady “does not live her life” or “treat other human beings” like her online persona.
