Henry, the school diary and math quizzes – STORY TIME!

Henry is a 25 year old software engineer who works in a famous company and earns a decent salary. All his life, he was extremely diligent and achieved excellent results in his studies. When he went to school, he was one of the teachers’ favorites. However, by the school’s elementary standards, he struggled with math. Who cares? He worked hard on this topic, honed his skills and became a successful software engineer today!

Well, that’s not what we’re trying to point out. Today, when he was about to clean out his wardrobe, he accidentally found a diary with the name of his school. When he opened it, he saw his name written on it in a child’s handwriting.

Everything was fine until he flipped through the pages. On the first page, he finds a sketch of his favorite cartoon from childhood. Henry was certainly very good at drawing when he was in school, but he can’t remember exactly when he drew this sketch. On another page, the guy found some random scribbles that he hadn’t noticed. On the third page, there is something really interesting but amazing.

On the third page he wrote,

“Whether I’m 10 or 25, I’ll never solve these HARD math puzzles.”

The announcement sent Henry into a state of shock. Perhaps when he wrote this quote, he might have been a 10-year-old. However, does this mean that 10-year-old Henry really defied today’s Henry? This sounds strange and even a little scary!

Henry immediately flipped through the pages and found some math puzzles written on them.

Now the super smart guy is a little nervous because his younger self has suddenly challenged him. Can you help Henry solve these math puzzles?

Math puzzles in Henry’s diary:

Math Quiz 1:

Liam asked his father for $50 and his mother for $50, and his parents gave him the requested amount. Now that means he has $100. With that money, he went to the store and bought a $97 coat. Now, with $3 left on him, Liam gives $1 to dad and $1 to mom, keeping $1 for himself. That means Liam owes dad $49 and mom $49, for a total of $98. Now, the $1 he keeps is $99. Where did the second dollar go?

Math Quiz 2:

Susan installed a bunch of new faucets in her home. However, the speed of the two faucets is different. The hot water faucet installed by Susan fills the tub at a set rate of 15 liters per minute. On the other hand, the cold faucet in Susan’s bathroom discharges water at a fixed rate of 10 liters per minute. If we talk about the outlet, it also allows the water to drain out of the tub at a certain rate, i.e. 12 liters per minute.

(PS: Don’t be as careless as Susan and always try to save water!)

The last page reads:

“Answers for 25-year-old Henry”.

The statement was written by 10-year-old Henry in his son’s handwriting. Statements are followed by answers to math puzzles

“Answer for 25-year-old Henry”

Math Quiz 1:

Liam asked his father for $50 and his mother for $50, and his parents gave him the requested amount. Now that means he has $100. With that money, he went to the store and bought a $97 coat. Now, with $3 left on him, Liam gives $1 to dad and $1 to mom, keeping $1 for himself. That means Liam owes dad $49 and mom $49, for a total of $98. Now, the $1 he keeps is $99. Where did the second dollar go?

Answer 1:

The main thing here is that there is really no shortage of dollars! Liam starts with $100. Then he spent $97 on a blazer. After buying the blazer, he has $3 left. Then he gives $1 to dad and $1 to mom and keeps $1 for himself. This means that Liam owes his parents $98, but since he keeps $1 to himself, that amount can count towards the amount Liam owes them.

So the guy needs an extra $97 (the price of the coat) to pay his parents.

Now the bathtub can hold up to 520 liters.

If one fine day, Susan turned on the hot and cold taps, but somehow left the lid on, how many minutes would it take for the tub to actually overflow?

(PS: Don’t be as careless as Susan and always try to save water!)

Answer 2:

The answer is 40 minutes.

EXPLAIN: A hot water faucet can fill a bathtub at a rate of 15 liters per minute. Cold faucets, on the other hand, can fill a bathtub at a rate of 10 liters per minute.

Now water comes in at a rate of 25 liters per minute. (How? Well, 15 plus 10 is 25.)

Furthermore, the opening of the lid can be emptied at a rate of 12 liters per minute.

As a result, the bath is filled at a rate of 13 liters per minute. (How? Well, 12 minus 25 is 13.)

Now the bathtub has 520 liters of water.

So, since 520 divided by 13 is 40, the tub overflows after 40 minutes.

Math Quiz 3: When Gracy was 6 years old, her brother John was actually half her age. If Gracy cut her 50th birthday cake today, how old do you think her brother is?

Answer 3:

Ivan is 47 years old.

When Gracy was 6, John was 3. That doesn’t mean John is half her age. This also means that John is 3 years younger than Gracy.

Now, when Gracy is 50 years old and John is three years younger than his sister, he must be 47 years old today. Can you help Henry solve these weird math puzzles?

And why did young Henry leave these math puzzles to today’s 25-year-old Henry? Now this sounds scary. While math puzzles are really fun, some mysteries are better left unsolved. It seems today Henry completed a long overdue task, a small version of him that had to be completed years ago.
