Matthew’s memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing gave readers a glimpse into his life on and off the screen, including his struggles with addiction, which he spoke openly about over the years.
Back in 2022, Matthew shared the chilling confession, writing: “Not only do I have an illness, but I’m sick.
“Actually, I have it as bad as you can have it. It’s wall time all the time. It’s going to kill me.”
The A-list actor has told how he almost died and had a one in 50 chance of survival after his colon burst due to opiate use.
Although Matthew had a long history of addiction, no drugs were found at the scene, according to TMZ.
Law enforcement sources told the newspaper that emergency services were initially called to the Los Angeles property for a cardiac arrest.
Police told TMZ that no drugs were found at the scene and foul play is not suspected at this time.
The outlet revealed that Perry returned home after a two-hour game of pickleball and sent his assistant on an errand shortly after.
The aide was said to have returned about two hours later, where he found Perry unresponsive and called 911.
Matthew also made the heartbreaking revelation that he couldn’t bring himself to watch US comedy Friends, which shot him to international fame.
He said: “I didn’t watch the series and I didn’t watch the series, because I could go, drink, drink, drink, cocaine.
“I could tell season by season by how I looked.
“That’s why I don’t want to watch it, because that’s what I see.”
He wrote: “I was taking 55 Vicodin a day, I weighed 128 pounds, I was on Friends that 30 million people watched – and that’s why I can’t watch the show, ’cause I was brutally skinny.
“I had a rule that I would never drink or do drugs while working.
“Because I had too much respect for the five people I worked with.
“So I’ve never been wasted while working. What always makes me cry… is that it’s not fair. It’s not fair that I had to go through this disease and the other five didn’t.”

The actor’s latest Instagram post on Monday showed him taking a late-night bath.
In the picture, the star best known for his beloved character Chandler Bing can be seen relaxing in the water with headphones on.
“Oh, so the hot swirling water makes you feel good?” wrote the star in the description.
“I’m Mattman.”
In 2018, Matthew suffered a gastrointestinal perforation as a result of extreme opiate use.
He was given a two percent chance of survival after being in a coma for two weeks and had to use a colostomy bag until his colon healed.
While his body rested on the bag, he woke up covered in his own feces “50 to 60” times during his five-month hospital stay.
“I had shit all over my face, all over my body, in the next bed,” he admitted. “When it breaks, it breaks. You have to get nurses,”
The actor also revealed that he lost all his top teeth during a harrowing battle with addiction, after biting into a piece of peanut butter toast.
He said he carried them in a bag in his jeans pocket on the way to the dentist to get them fixed.
Matthew’s addiction only escalated as Friends became more popular.
At the height of the sitcom’s success, Matthew said he was consuming 55 Vicodin a day and weighed 128 pounds.
Even a stay in rehab couldn’t help.
He described rehab as a prison, joking that he might as well have been fed through a slot in a bolted door, adding that he hated a place that didn’t teach him anything.
The US Sun witnessed Perry’s father looking distraught as he arrived at Matthew’s home and spoke to officers before slowly walking back to his vehicle and being released under a cordon.
The 82-year-old actor, who is the father of Friends star John Bennett Perry, was joined by Matthew’s mum Suzanne Morrison and stepdad Keith Morrison, who looked shocked as they stopped at the property.
The American Sun also learned that investigators showed up at Perry’s mansion in Los Angeles around 7 p.m. local time and were waiting for the coroner.
Emergency services were said to have been called at around 4pm and investigators spent hours at the home as Matthew’s family were seen distraught when they arrived at the scene.
They left several hours later and the coroner arrived around 10.35pm and was still on the property with the body in the residence at midnight.

Neighbor saw ‘too much’ and left ‘upset’
The neighbor, 17, told the US Sun that he and his younger siblings had seen “too much” and were left “upset” when police arrived to find Matthew unresponsive in a backyard jacuzzi.
It is understood some neighbors could see over their back fences as the drama unfolded.
“I was actually at home when the 911 showed up and I looked outside, I was just about to go to my friend’s house,” he said.
“They were in front of my neighbor’s door. I didn’t think much of it at the time until the police started coming and everything. They did not bang on the door, they were silent.
“It was very upsetting and very sad after all these years … because of what he went through and his addictions and everything.
“I saw everything, I feel sorry for my younger brothers and sisters.
“I was very sad. At the same time, I kind of expected it, but I didn’t expect it to be so soon. He didn’t live there for long.
“My heart broke when I saw what happened. I met him once, he was very friendly, friendlier than I thought.
“A very kind and sincere guy. I’ve always looked up to Matthew and he’s probably one of my favorite actors of all time. He made the funniest jokes on the show.
“I just hope his friends and family can come together at this time.”
Perry downsized to a Pacific Palisades beachside home after selling his multimillion-dollar penthouse, and neighbors say he spent months remodeling the pool and yard, feeling it was where he could spend his retirement years.
One said: “The work was loud and lasted for weeks. I think he was mad at his contractor for taking so long. The noise only stopped about a week ago, and come to think of it, he was hardly enjoying the pool. Now he is gone. It’s incredibly sad.”
Perry had a regular sobriety coach who would spend time with him, along with other friends in recovery, but spent most days alone with his assistant.
The actor was last seen at The Apple Pan restaurant in Los Angeles.
He seemed depressed, despite being out with friends.
