Pfeiffer said she “was worried” and that the date “didn’t go well.” As she explained, “We were in this restaurant and there were eight of us, and somehow [David] ended up sitting across from my sister and I ended up sitting across from his best friend.”

“We didn’t talk all night and then he left early to go to another party and I was like, ‘Okay, it went well,'” Pfeiffer recalled.

At the time of their meeting, Pfeiffer was already in the process of adopting her daughter Claudia. She and Kelley, a longtime TV creator and producer, had only been dating for about two months when she brought Claudia home.

“So we immediately had this kid with us, and most people don’t have that. But I really had to see it [David] in a situation that would surely separate the boys from the men. He’s obviously really risen to the occasion,” Pfeiffer said Good housekeeping 2007. “We both saw each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together and, in a strange way, that took the pressure off, as a couple.”

She continued: “It was perfectly timed. I mean, it’s a real testament to the kind of person she is, but also the fact that sometimes the traditional way of doing things isn’t always the best.”

The couple married in November 1993, and Kelley officially adopted Claudia that same year. The following year they had a son, John Henry.
