Michigan House Explosion Kills 4, Injures 2 Others

Four people were killed and two were injured Saturday in an explosion at a home in Northfield Township, Michigan.

Northfield Township Police Lt. David Powell said in a statement posted on Facebook that the incident occurred on Dec. 30, 2023, when police and firefighters were dispatched to the home for an “unknown explosion.”

“Upon arrival, the police and firefighters found a completely destroyed family home with ruins covering approx. [two] acres of property,” Powell said in a statement.

He added: “The police and firemen found out there were some [six] occupants of the home and began searching the grounds for the occupants while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.”

According to police, police and firefighters “located three deceased individuals from the home at the scene and three other occupants were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.” One of those transported to the hospital later succumbed to his injuries.

None of the victims have yet been publicly identified.

As of 1:00 p.m. ET on December 31, 2023, “there are four (4) confirmed deaths, while the other two (2) residents are still hospitalized,” Powell said.

Speaking to NBC affiliate WDIV, a neighbor of the house that exploded said, “It went off like a bomb. I don’t know how to explain it. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen.”

“I live about 100 meters from it and when I drove there, something was still falling from the sky,” they said about that outlet.

However, no other houses in the area were damaged News from Detroit reported that debris spread over two acres from the force of the explosion and that the blast could be heard nine miles away.

Although authorities said that “the investigation into the cause of the explosion will continue for several days,” investigators working at the scene were hampered by what police called a “tremendous amount of traffic” on the street where the incident occurred.

“We want to inform the public that this is an active investigation,” Powell said, according to the statement, adding, “We would like to express our sincere condolences to the families of the victim at this difficult time.”
