Michael Gregory Rowe was born in Baltimore, Maryland on March 18, 1962. His parents, John and Peggy Rowe, were also teachers. He was the eldest of three children of his parents; He has two younger brothers, Scott and Phil.
He was educated at Overlea High School. While there, he became interested in theater and singing, and excelled under the direction of choir conductor Freddie King. He later attributed his passion for performing to King. He earned his high school Eagle Scout title in 1979, and as part of his community service mission, he had to read aloud to students at the Maryland School for the Blind. His interest in writing and storytelling was awakened by that encounter.

In 1984, Mike Rowe entered the Baltimore Opera with fake credentials, intending to get his SAG certificate, the certification needed to enter the television profession.

He began hosting “Your New Home” for WJZ-TV in Baltimore in the mid-1980s and continued to do so for the next fifteen years.
