The TikTok post instructs users to look at the center of a rotating pattern in motion.

The video has nearly 150,000 likes and hundreds of comments.

“My hand felt like it was sinking after seeing the illusion,” wrote one commenter.

“My palm started to move inward,” added another.

The video creates an effect called a motion side effect or spiral side effect.

Note the pattern seen in the afterimage records in the opposite direction of the original video.

The spiral aftereffect is caused by desensitization of the neurons responsible for interpreting the movement of the video.

The concept was first described by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle when he observed the movement of a waterfall that after looking away left an impression.

Looking at the center and then looking at your hand or a blank wall will give you an idea of a condition called palinopsia.

Patients with palinopsia may experience afterimages that are more intense and debilitating than the effects caused by optical illusions.

Optical illusions draw an interesting line in our interpretation of reality.

Fortunately, the brain is usually accurate when calculating visuals, although the spiraling aftereffect is quite effective at selling a move that doesn’t actually exist.
