Peacock’s latest show Mr. Return it has three stars with three wardrobes so different you’d think they came from three different worlds.
And actually, they do.
Danny (Adam Pally) is a down-on-his-luck owner of a vintage sportswear store who was a basketball star in his youth. His wardrobe reflects this – he wears the same things he sells and lives a vintage life.
Then you have Stephen Curry, played by Stephen Curry. He is exactly what you think he is in his TV debut and he dresses like one. He’s sporty, he’s chic. He used to be friends with Danny, but they lost touch after the incident and recently became close again.
There is also Kim (Ego Nwodim), who is the CEO of Steph’s company. She is a powerful woman in a man’s world who is fashionable, successful and keeps everything in order. She’s sexy, wears designer clothes, and is skeptical of Danny’s return to their lives — because she’s also known the two of them since they were young.
Costume designer Olivia Perdoch was tasked with creating these wardrobes that felt like they would fit seamlessly into the real life of someone like Curry or not look too costumey at Pally. She says she had to find “a little bit of everything” because her characters were unique. Below, she breaks down her process for PEOPLE.

I love how Danny lives in the clothes he sells in his store, as well as everything else with a vintage feel. Tell me about the creation of his character.
Adam Pally, who plays Danny, and I have been working together for about three years. We met on a great little indie film called Who invited Charlie. I remember from the first Zoom when we introduced ourselves, we both appeared on the screen and we were wearing similar clothes, and we were like, “Okay, that works.”
He’s really into fashion, especially menswear and vintage, and that’s how we became close.
Before we even started getting ready, I went over to his house and ransacked his closet because he has so much vintage. Our philosophy is that the clothes on him, no matter what character he’s playing, should always look like they’re his, not a costume.

We used that as a base, and then I created the whole lookbook. We immediately recognized the character, which is a testament to the excellent writing and great management of the series. I got quite a wardrobe at a vintage convention called Inspiration in LA, which has some of the best vintage menswear vendors from around the country. I also talked to all these guys who are into antiques because that’s part of Adam’s character.
From there we had such a great basis for the character. I found my vintage dealers. There were two in particular that I would go to probably every other day. I got to know them very well and developed character through that. I brought Adam to them when he was in town, we talked with them, looked around the store and thought about what would attract Danny. Everything was focused on character throughout, which Adam is also very good at.

Then you have Stephen Curry, who is himself but not him. How did you wear it? Does he even wear his clothes?
A great honor for Steph is that he has the sponsorship of Under Armour. He plays himself in the play, so we had to include that. You’re going to see a lot of Under Armor on him on the show, things that are just his normal pieces, like what he’s playing basketball in or training in.
As for regular clothes, I got everything. We had a rehearsal with him. Our goal was to keep it itself, keep it authentic, but elevate it for television and make it something cool and just plain fun.

I wanted to go to the rehearsal and have fun with him, because it’s his first time doing things like this. We did what I think is such a fun show and I actually had a rehearsal with him before the director got to talk to him. We were the first people to reach out to him, so we said, “Let’s excite him, let’s have fun and make him experiment.”
So the goal was to make it really fun and introduce him to some new brands, maybe some smaller brands that he might not know and to look like himself, never look like he’s wearing a costume or trying to be something else, just kind to have fun with him and see what he likes and how he feels. We had a really fun selection and he tried everything on and we picked the pieces he naturally gravitated to. I think you’ll find it looks really cool.

And then there’s Kim, who’s so chic and fashionable, wears designer clothes, keeps everything in order. Everything she wore was perfect.
In the beginning, we had some taller, slouch or oversize pieces for this character. You think The Row is kind of energy, because she doesn’t carry any brands or flashy things, but we’ve changed that. She is always polished and cool. There is definitely no vintage, everything is new and special. Her character is based on the CEO of Steph’s real-life company, Tiffany Williams, who is wonderful. I talked to her and said, “What do you wear when you have to do this or this or this?” We thought about Kimberly’s character: she’s so busy she doesn’t have time to shop or find pieces or hunt for vintage. She has a customer for her who knows her style and body, and they go to Saks and pull out all the designer stuff for her, she puts it on and she’s done. That was the direction behind her character.
