Mum ‘heard screaming at four sons before they died in fire after she left them alone in squalid home for shopping trip’

A MUM was reportedly heard screaming at her four sons before they died in a fire after she left them alone in their squalid house to buy.

Leyton and Logan Hoath, three, and Kyson and Bryson Hoath, four, died surrounded by rubbish and human excrement, the court heard.

Deveca Rose denied four counts of manslaughter

Deveca Rose, 29, is accused of murdering her two sets of twins after she left them locked to go to Sainsbury’s in Sutton on the outskirts of south London.

The Old Bailey heard how a dropped cigarette or an upturned tea light started the fire after igniting a mountain of rubbish on the floor.

Jurors heard the house was squalid, with buckets and pots used as toilets and rubbish left in the bath.

An hour before the horror, a neighbor heard Rose “screaming, shouting and swearing” at the children.

She yelled “why the hell would you do that?” before I popped into Sainsbury’s to buy “non-essential” stuff, it said.

Neighbors realized that the house was on fire around 7 p.m. and could hear the tragic children inside, but could not access it.

Kate Lumsdon KC, prosecuting, said: “The neighbor kicked in the door but the fire had taken hold to the point where it was impossible to get in.

“Fire crews were called. Many units came. With proper protective clothing and breathing apparatus, firefighters extinguished the fire and entered the house.

“They found four boys under the bed in the front room upstairs. They were limp and unconscious.

“Firefighters noticed that there was trash and human excrement on the floor of the house. There was a mattress and a door on the stairs.”

The court heard that Rose arrived home to find her terraced house alight.

At first she claimed she had left the children with a woman named Jade – prompting firefighters to go back inside to look for her.

But there was no sign of her and police found “no trace” of Jade, jurors heard.

Emergency crews tried to save the four children, but unfortunately they were pronounced dead soon after.

The cause of death was given as fire inhalation.

The court was told that social services were involved with the children between July and September 2021.

It came about after a GP noted a “chaotic home environment”.

Officers found the garden littered with rubbish and a “very strong foul smell”, it said.

One added: “I asked to see the boys and Deveca refused saying they were sleeping. I went to leave but I asked again as I went, Deveca then became quite manic and defensive, walked out the door with me and closed it for himself to her.

“I am concerned about her mental health and the fact that she refused to let me see the boys.”

But jurors heard the case was closed when Rose failed to attend further meetings.

The court was told that the boys had also not gone to school for three months before the tragedy, but teachers did not find it strange as it was during Covid.

Mrs Lumsdon said: “Deveca Rose refused offers of help from family and social services and tried to ensure that no one discovered the conditions in which she lived with the children.

“You will hear that Mrs Rose has now been examined by specialist doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists, who have concluded that she was probably depressed at the time and may have suffered from a personality disorder.

“This may explain the way she behaved. But, we believe, it does not constitute a defense.”

“The Crown is well aware that Mrs. Rose lost all four of her children through her own fault. Her grief must be immense. She will blame herself. It’s safe to say she has suffered enough.

“However, it is not just Mrs. Rose who must be considered in these circumstances. We must consider her children, who were bright and full of life, and whose lives were needlessly taken.

‘We also have to consider the children’s father, Dalton Hoath, who lost all four of his children in one fell swoop.’

Rose, of Wallington, south London, denies four counts of manslaughter and the trial continues.
