NR Narayana Murthy was born on Tuesday, August 20, 1946, in Shidlaghatta, Chikkaballapura district, Karnataka (age 77; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Leo. Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy was born into a Brahmin Hindu family. His father N. Rama Rao is a high school teacher. His mother’s name was Padavasama Murthy. He has seven brothers and sisters. Murthy met Sudha Murthy (then Sudha Kulkarni) in Pune through a common friend Prasanna (a key figure in Wipro). He invites Sudha and her friends to have dinner. They started going out to movies, restaurants and parties together. Soon they became good friends and one day Murthy proposed to her saying,
I want to tell you something. I am 5 feet 4 inches tall. I come from a lower-middle-class family. I can never become rich. You are beautiful, smart, smart and you can get anyone you want. But will you marry me? “
Sudha liked his honesty, but she needed her parents’ approval first. She arranged a meeting between Murthy and her parents. Murthy got stuck in traffic and couldn’t make it to the meeting on time, which made Sudha’s father very angry. Two hours after the time set for the meeting, Murthy booked a taxi and arrived at Sudha’s residence wearing a bright red shirt. Sudha’s father asked him about his goals and Murthy said that he wanted to become a politician and open an orphanage. Sudha’s father was dissatisfied with his answer and said:
I don’t want my daughter to marry a wannabe communist and then open an orphanage when he has no money to support his family. “
Nearly three years later, Murthy landed a job as general manager. Sudha’s father finally accepted Muti’s proposal. He married Sudha on February 10, 1978, at her home in Bangalore in the presence of both family members. He and Sudha shared the expenses of the marriage, which was only Rs. 800. The couple has two children Akshata Murty and Rohan Murty.

Profession
After completing his master’s degree, he started working as a research analyst and later as a lead programmer at IIM Ahmedabad. He had the opportunity to participate in the development of India’s first time-sharing computer system and designed and implemented a BASIC interpreter for the Indian Electronics Corporation.
Later, he founded a company, Softronics, which failed. In 1977, he joined Patni Computers in Bombay (now Mumbai) as General Manager. He worked there for nearly four years, but wanted to start his own company. He had no money to start a business, then his wife Sudha gave him Rs. 10,000 to start a business.
Murthy founded Infosys in Pune in 1981 with six other software engineers with an initial capital of US$250. The seven founders of Infosys include NR Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, S. Gopalakrishnan, SD Shibulal, K. Dinesh, NS Raghavan and Ashok Arora.
In 1983, Infosys moved from Pune to Bangalore. Murthy served as CEO of Infosys from 1981 to 2002 and then as Chairman of the Board from 2002 to 2006. In August 2011, he retired from Infosys with the title of Chairman Emeritus.
On June 1, 2013, he returned to Infosys as Executive Chairman and Additional Director. In 2014, he resigned as executive chairman and continued as a non-executive director until October 10, 2013, and was appointed honorary chairman on October 11, 2013. Thanks to the efforts of Murthy and the other six co-founders, Infosys has become one of the leading companies in the world. India’s largest IT company with more than 800 customers in 30 countries.
On March 29, 2019, its market capitalization was US$46.52 billion. In addition to being the co-founder of Infosys, Murthy serves as an independent director on the corporate board of HSBC Bank and on the boards of DBS Bank, Unilever, ICICI and NDTV. He also serves on the advisory boards and boards of directors of several educational and charitable organizations.
