Naomi Watts Mourns Grandmother After Her Death at 99 Following Her ‘Massive Stroke’ 3 Weeks Ago: We’re ‘All in Pieces’

Naomi Watts mourns the death of her “nanna”.

The Feud: Capote vs. Swans star, 55, announced on Thursday, August 29, that her grandmother Nikki Roberts died three weeks after suffering a “massive stroke.” She was 99 years old.

In a tribute on Instagram, paired with a carousel of photos of Roberts with four generations of family members, Watts wrote about her grandmother’s legacy and emphasized how her “spirit will never leave us.”

“She is such a big part of who I am: her core values, her work ethic and her mischievous humor and joy for life,” Watts wrote in the caption.

In her Instagram Stories, the two-time Oscar nominee said she last saw Roberts in person in October and they last spoke on Monday, Aug. 26, via video call. “We’re going to miss you so much,” Watts said.

Roberts celebrated her 99th birthday on August 16 – a milestone she wanted to reach after surviving a stroke in early August.

“She had to fulfill another goal. Her 99th birthday!! Another party. Another family reunion,” noted Watts, who included photos from that last family reunion and other precious life moments in an Instagram tribute.

“My mom and aunts are all in pieces today, but we know she had a great life. She just kept running because she loved her life and her family,” he said Mulholland Drive and 21 grams the actress continued. “She lived another 3 weeks after her massive stroke because, in full beast mode, she showed us that when she’s finally ready to ‘go, she’ll take over’. ”

The first tribute photo was a picture of Watts and her mum Myfanwy Edwards with Roberts at a 2015 New Year’s Eve party in Sydney.

“I will never forget her wicked laugh, her buoyant spirit, her no-nonsense attitude, her no-waste politics,” Watts said. “She would remove the mold from bread and cheese: ‘You don’t need an expiration date – that’s what your nose is for!’ Grandmothers are the greatest. Let her stories and memories live on.”

Her brother, photographer Ben Watts, also remembered their grandmother on his Instagram stories, writing: “Goodbye Nanna. Relax. You taught Naomi and me so much while living with you: to save and reuse things, not to be wasteful, and charity begins at home.”

Meanwhile, celebrity friends of the Watts sent their condolences.

“She laughs with the angels. How blessed your family is to have her,” Glenn Close commented on the tribute, while Julianne Moore wrote: “I’m sorry for your loss. What a beautiful person.”
