The NHS worker was found dead by a passer-by in Southall Park, west London, in the early hours of July 17, 2021, the Old Bailey was told.

Homeless Iidow (35) is on trial accused of rape and manslaughter.

Opening the case on Wednesday, Alison Morgan KC, prosecuting, said: “The prosecution alleges that Natalie was a vulnerable woman, enjoying herself out at night, who was then taken advantage of by this defendant.

“It appears that Natalie Shotter was not aware at the time she was raped, let alone consenting to the defendant.

“He could never believe that she agreed.

“Natalie’s multiple rape process caused her death.”

Ms Morgan told jurors it took time to understand what happened to Ms Shotter that night and what caused her death.

CCTV footage showed her barely moving and appeared to be unconscious when she was raped and therefore unable to consent, Ms Morgan said.

Earlier that night, Ms Shotter was captured on another CCTV recording dancing outside the shop with other people.

Jurors were told the victim was just over 5ft tall and weighed just 43kg (6st 11lb).

She had been drinking all evening and may have inhaled poppers, it was said.

Mrs Morgan added: “Very sadly by the time she was found she was dead and it was obvious she had been dead for several hours.

“She was not stabbed or beaten to death, there were no obvious signs of significant injury to her body and there was no one else with her.

“It took time to understand what must have happened to Natalie that night to understand the cause of her death.

“It is crucial that a CCTV camera some distance from the bench where she was found would reveal what happened to her that night.”

Iidow was first arrested on August 4, 2021, and charged on December 21, 2023.

He denied the charges against him and the trial at the Old Bailey was adjourned until Friday.

The trial continues and will last two to three weeks.
