She had her first leading role in the film Love 24×7 (2015), opposite popular actor Dileep. In 2018, she appeared in the film Aravindante Athidhikal and received huge accolades for her starring role. In the same year, she played the lead role in the film Njan Prakashan, starring Fahadh Faasil, who played the eponymous character in the film. Being trolled for controversial comments
In 2023, Nikhila Vimal sparked a controversy after she made a statement about Muslim weddings in Malabar. In an interview, she spoke about the traditional practice in Kannur where during weddings in Muslim families, women usually enjoy food in the kitchen area. She noted that the practice has not changed significantly. Many netizens found her comments offensive and accused her of targeting a religious group. However, the actress later claimed that her remarks were distorted by the media and caused controversy. She further claimed that the media only shared a portion of her conversation and this cannot be considered a statement. She said of this in an interview:
There was controversy in the media. I said this in a conversation. How is what someone says in a conversation considered their statement? No reporter asked me what I said. I know exactly what I said. ”
