A preliminary investigation into the Baltimore bridge collapse has found no evidence of terrorism, authorities said at a news conference Tuesday morning.
“We’re still investigating what happened, but we’re quickly gathering details,” Maryland Governor Wes Moore said. “We have not seen any credible evidence of a terrorist attack.”
Bill DelBagno, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Baltimore field office, also stressed that it is not considered terrorism.
“I want to be clear that there is no concrete or credible information to suggest that this incident has anything to do with terrorism,” DelBagno said.
Icy conditions ‘concern’ for rescuers amid Baltimore bridge collapse
The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River around 1:30 a.m. after being hit by a Singapore-flagged container ship Whetherwhich sent several vehicles into the river, according to multiple media outlets.
Baltimore City Fire Department spokesman Kevin Cartwright initially told CNN the collapse was “a multi-agency multi-casualty incident.”

The US Coast Guard was still actively searching for survivors as of 10 a.m. local time, a spokesman said.

The Whetherabout 985 feet long and 157 feet wide, was leaving port on a 27-day voyage to Sri Lanka, The New York Times reported.

The ship notified port authorities it was experiencing power problems and Baltimore officials then closed the bridge to traffic moments before the accident, officials said at a news conference.
Governor Moore said his administration is “working closely with leaders from all levels of government” to address the tragedy and its aftermath.
“We’re Maryland tough and we’re Baltimore tough,” Moore said.
