P. Chidambaram is a famous Indian politician. He served as finance minister in Manmohan Singh’s government from 2004 to 2014. He is a member of the Lok Sabha and an advocate in the Supreme Court of India.

P. Chidambaram was born on Sunday, September 16, 1945, in Kanadukathan village, Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu (age 76; as of 2021). His zodiac sign is Virgo. He received his education at St. Thomas Convent, Christian High School and Loyola College, Chennai. In 1964, he studied for a bachelor’s degree. PhD in Statistics from Presidency College, Chennai. In 1996, he received his Bachelor of Laws degree from Madras Law College, Chennai. In 1968, he went to the United States to study for an MBA at Harvard Business School. On his return to India, he practiced law at the Madras High Court. He practiced law for two years and then moved to New Delhi to practice before the Supreme Court of India. He became the leader of the MRF Tire Federation; this made him interested in politics.

His wife is Nalini Chidambaram. On December 11, 1968, they eloped and got married; because their families did not approve of their marriage. Nalini is the daughter of retired Supreme Court judge PS Kailasam and renowned Tamil poet, author and senior advocate Soundra Kailasam of Madras High Court and Supreme Court of India. They have a son, Karti Chidambaram.

Chidambaram joined the Indian National Congress in 1972 and was elected as a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in the same year. He was appointed President of the Tamil Nadu Youth Congress from 1973 to 1976. In 1976, he was elected as the Secretary General of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (PCC).

In 1984, he was elected to the eighth Lok Sabha from Shivganga constituency in Tamil Nadu. On September 21, 1985, he was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Commerce by Rajiv Gandhi. From 1985 to 1986, he also served as Federal Deputy Minister for Administrative Reform, Personal and Public Complaints, and Pensions. In 1987, he was promoted to Federal Minister of State for Personnel and Public Complaints, Pensions and Home Affairs (Internal Security).

In 1989, he was elected to the ninth Lok Sabha from Shivganga constituency in Tamil Nadu. In 1991, he was re-elected to the 10th Lok Sabha and appointed as the Federal Minister of State for Commerce (Independent Charge).

Chidambaram quit the Congress in 1996 and joined the Tamil Manila Congress (TMC), which was formed by former Tamil Nadu Congress members. In 1996, the TMC formed a coalition government with other political parties in Tamil Nadu, and Chidambaram was appointed finance minister. In 1998, he was elected to Lok Sabha for the fifth time from Shivganga constituency. In 2001, he formed his own political party, Congress Jananayaka Peravai. However, after the 2004 general election, he merged his party with the Congress.

In 2004, he was elected as Member of Parliament for Sivaganagar constituency. He joined the Manmohan Singh government and was appointed Union Finance Minister. In 2009, he was re-elected to the People’s House of Representatives for the seventh time.

He was appointed Union Home Minister after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks; the previous Home Minister resigned after the 26/11 attacks. In 2012, after Pranab Mukherjee was appointed President of India, he was again appointed as Union Finance Minister. In 2016, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra. On June 16, 2022, after being elected to the Rajya Sabha in his home state of Tamil Nadu, he submitted his resignation as a member of the Lok Sabha from Maharashtra to the Chairman of the House.

  • Chidambaram resigned as Minister of State for Commerce in July 1992 after his wife Nalini Chidambaram invested in a company involved in a stock market scam. Nalini reportedly knew about the scam before it came to light and instead of reporting it to authorities, she invested in it.
  • On April 6, 2009, Chidambaram was speaking at a press conference when journalist Jarnail Singh threw a shoe at him , explaining why Congress leader Jagdish Tytler was cleared of the 1984 Sikh riots. When asked about his actions, Janelle said:

    “Chidambaram didn’t answer me and didn’t give me an effective reply, so I threw a shoe at him”

  • In July 2013, Ram Jethmalani accused Chidambaram of money laundering. In a letter to Chidambaram, he stated that Chidambaram had Rs. ‘NDTV’ laundered Rs 5000 Crore for itself through Mauritius.
  • Chidambaram came under criticism for serving as Union Home Minister after the 2011 Mumbai blasts. The media and several politicians blamed Chidambaram and said that despite massive investments in upgrading intelligence networks and internal security after the 26/11 attacks, the terrorist attacks took place.
  • In 2002, it was reported that Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram and Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra used Chidambaram’s position as finance minister. They are the beneficiaries of the 2G scam. Karti and Vadra promoted the Aircel-Maxis deal to receive bribes. P Chidambaram was also accused of delaying the FDI proposal by seven months to get the Aircel-Maxis deal approved.
  • INX MEDIA CASE – JANUARY 2008 – The Income Tax Department flagged INX Media Pvt Ltd. (owned by Peter Mukerjea and Indrani Mukerjea) for INR 305 Crore Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 3 Mauritius based companies. The case has been handed over to the Enforcement Directorate (ED). 2010 – The Enforcement Directorate registered a case of violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) by INX Media. 2016 – While investigating Karti Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis case, the Enforcement Directorate discovered files linked to “INX Media” on his CA computer. Documents show INX Media made payments to Karti’s company. The transactions were carried out after P. Chidambaram granted Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to INX Media. May 15, 2017 – ED registers a corruption case against P. Chidambaram in FIPB. October 11, 2018 – ED has seized properties of Karti Chidambaram worth INR 54 crore in India, UK and Spain in connection with INX Media money laundering case. July 11, 2019 – Indrani Mukerjea becomes approver in INX Media case. She accepted the ED’s conditions and provided all information relevant to the case. Thereafter, P. Chidambaram applied for anticipatory bail in the Delhi High Court. August 20, 2019 – Delhi High Court rejects Chidambaram’s bail plea and asks him to appear in court. Chidambaram applied for anticipatory bail to the Supreme Court of India, but this was also rejected. He disappeared for 27 hours after that. Meanwhile, the CBI issued a surveillance notice against Chidambaram. August 21, 2019 – 8 pm, Chidambaram appeared at a press conference at the AICC headquarters. He said he was innocent and was targeted due to a political vendetta by the BJP. Soon after the press conference, he returned to his home in Jorbagh, New Delhi. The CBI reached his residence but he refused to open the door. Later, the CBI officials had to climb over the wall to arrest Chidambaram from his residence. September 5, 2019 – A CBI court sentenced him to 14 days of judicial custody in Tihar Jail in the INX Media case. December 4, 2019 – He walks out of jail after spending 105 days, with the Supreme Court granting him bail in the INX Media money laundering case.
