Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is an Indian badminton player. She is the only Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. In March 2015, Sindhu was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honor, for her contribution to sports. In 2018, she was ranked seventh on Forbes’ list of “Highest-Paid Female Athletes” and ranked first on Forbes India’s inaugural list of 22 Young Achievers.

She attended Auxilium High School. She studied well since childhood and determined to become a doctor. Sindhu started playing badminton when she was eight and a half years old. Initially, she just played for fun, but soon she realized she wanted to make a career out of it. She enrolled at the Indian Railways Academy in Secunderabad to learn the basics of badminton from Mehboob Ali and later joined Pullela Gopichand’s Badminton Academy to improve her skills. Sindhu is till date (as of 2019) coached by Pullela Gopichand. Notably, he is also the head coach of the Indian badminton team. Thereafter, she entered St. Ann’s College for Women to pursue an MBA.

PV Sindhu is the daughter of PV Ramana and P. Vijaya. Her parents are both former volleyball players. Her father PV Ramana was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2000 for his contribution to sports. She has an elder sister, Divyaram Pusarla, who was a national-level handball player and later became a doctor.
Profession
In 2009, Sindhu made her international debut as a badminton player at the Asian Youth Badminton Championships in Colombo, where she won a bronze medal. Next, she participated in the 2010 Iran Dawn International Badminton Challenge and won a silver medal in singles. In 2011, she won the singles gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Douglas. This was a turning point in her life. However, her best performance came in 2012 when she defeated 2012 London Olympics gold medalist Li Xuerui of China in the Li-Ning China Masters Super Series. In 2013, Sindhu became the first Indian women’s singles player to win a medal at the Badminton World Championships. She then defeated Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the semifinals of the 2016 Summer Olympics and reached the final. With this, she became the first Indian badminton player to reach the finals of the 2016 Summer Olympics. She even became the youngest Indian to reach the podium in an individual event at the Olympics. However, Sidhu was defeated by Carolina Marin in the 83-minute final, earning her a Summer Olympics silver medal. In 2018, she defeated Japanese player Nozomi Okuhara in the 2018 World Tour final and won the World Tour championship.
On August 1, 2021, she won the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, defeating China’s He Bingjiao 21-13, 21-15, becoming the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. In July 2022, she won the Singapore Open championship; she defeated Chinese player Wang Zhiyi.
