Thermal areas within the park include five types of hydrothermal features, including hot springs, geysers, mud pots, tuff terraces and fumaroles, according to Yellowstone National Park’s official website.

Park visitors are advised of a number of rules around thermal areas, including: “Do not travel through thermal areas after dark; Supplies are not allowed in thermal areas; Changing or placing objects in thermal features is prohibited; and it is forbidden to swim, soak or bathe in water that is entirely of thermal origin.”

The park warns that the ground below the thermal areas “may be only a thin crust above the boiling hot springs”, and there is no confirmation as to whether the area is safe or not.

Additionally, park visitors must stay on the park’s established walking trails because “the pools are acidic enough to burn through your boots.”

In addition to avoiding thermal areas, park officials advise visitors to “be aware of their surroundings and be responsible for children visiting the geyser pools.”
