Prince Always Wore Women’s Perfume — and His Ex Reveals His Favorite Scents (Exclusive)

It’s probably no surprise that Prince, arguably one of the most stylish singers of all time, also liked to smell good.

“He was a big fan of perfume, like me,” his ex-wife Mayte Garcia told PEOPLE exclusively about her late husband, who died in 2016. “I don’t know if a lot of people know this about him, but he always wore women’s perfume instead of men’s cologne. He was doing it before I even met him.”

During the pandemic, as a way to raise funds for her dog rescue mission, Garcia says she started playing with candle making.

“I started making them out of desperation to raise money for my dog rescue mission,” she says. “And I got really good at it! And then the first candle I made, Eternal Love, was really good, but there was a twist – the scent was the perfume he was wearing,” she says.

That smell? Dune from Dior.

“He wore Dune all the time, so I took the oil and added a bit of smokiness and sweetness to it. He also liked Samsara by Guerlain and Thierry Mugler Angel,” she says. “He loved flowers. He also loved Carolina Herrera, although he couldn’t wear her with me because I’m allergic to jasmine. But he always smelled amazing, even when he was on stage. He never smelled bad!”

Remembering Prince’s life in photos

Garcia, who now runs the charity Live 4 Love in honor of her and Prince’s son Amir, who died six days after his birth, says the candle she sells on the charity’s website — Love 4 One Another — goes straight to the charity, while any portion of the fragrance she sells on her Mayte Garcia site goes to help find new homes for rescue puppies.

“Our best-selling product is the Haze,” she says of the candle on her site. “It smells amazing. It’s a sweet scent. And the best part about my candles is that they’re made with cocoa wax, so they burn really clean—you can even put the oil on your skin!”
