Princess Diana’s Uniform Is Still ‘In’ Nearly 3 Decades Later — and Now’s the Ideal Time to Wear It

Princess Diana’s style in one word? Timeless.

She passed away before I was even born, but even now, almost three decades later, I take advice from the Princess. More specifically, my Roman Empire is her off-duty style, as well as whenever she wore shorts, sweatpants, and sneakers—which was actually quite often. And celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Cardi B still mention it.

Each sighting was slightly different from the last, but basically the same. They consisted of crewneck trousers (her iconic Virgin Atlantic selection ended up selling for $50,000 at auction) and various cycling shorts.

Since Northwestern is my alma mater (and Meghan Markle’s), I’m obviously going to take the most literal approach to recreating Diana’s outfit. But for someone else, it would be as simple as choosing a shirt for your school, team or city, like this Los Angeles shirt.

And remember: style is personal, so it’s okay to make a few tweaks here and there. One that I could apply on a day when I’m not in the mood to repeat anything? Wear a plain hoodie or a turtleneck like this one. Plus, according to one customer, the inside is “super soft and fuzzy.”

I don’t like tights, but bike pants are much looser. And I practically live in them during the transition seasons when the weather hits that sweet spot between hot and cold. Diana wore more colors and I plan to do the same, although probably not in white because I’m afraid they might be sheer.

These from Baleaf come in three lengths, so as someone who is quite tall, I can wear them with confidence. They have also collected more than 60,000 perfect ratings. But if I’m craving coral, I’d step out in this $14 pair that looks like Diana’s and also feels “like butter.”

Diana’s bags ranged from styles with top handles – a detail favored by her daughter-in-law Kate Middleton – to those with longer handles that she could carry off-hand. Although this highly praised bag is a former, it also has a crossbody strap, so it can be worn either way.

And since it wouldn’t make sense to wear comfortable, casual clothes with a pair of shoes, I need another pair of sneakers. I’ve always been strict about shoes, so I don’t always like to spend a ton of money on them. They’re only $27 and have a padded insole, so they should be at least semi-comfortable.
