Rachel DeLoache Williams Files For A Lawsuit Against Netflix

While Netflix’s Inventing Anna quickly became a cult favorite, Rachel DeLoache Williams, also known as Anna’s best friend, was unimpressed. On Monday, August 29, 2022, a former Vanity Fair employee and friend of Soroka sued Netflix for defamation over her portrayal in the series. According to her, Netflix gave several characters in the show fictional names, but did not do the same for Williams and her protection. They used her real name and personal information, as well as an actor who resembled her in many ways. You can see more about Williams’ comments and the famous Netflix series below.

Biography of Rachel DeLoache Williams

Rachel DeLoache Williams is a writer, photographer and editor from the United States. She was a photo editor and producer at Vanity Fair before becoming famous as a former acquaintance of Anna Sorokin, a con artist who claimed to be a German heiress and defrauded Williams of $62,000. After the fraud, she reported Sorokin to the New York City Department of Government and the New York County District Attorney, which helped police locate and arrest Sorokin in Los Angeles. She also testified against her in court. Rachel DeLoache Williams subsequently published an essay in Vanity Fair about her experiences with Sorokin in 2018, and has since written for Time and Air Mail, as well as the book My Friend Anna: The True Story of New York City’s Fake Heiress.

Williams was also among the real people featured in the real-life drama surrounding “fake heiress” Anna Delvey, aka Anna Sorokin in Netflix’s Inventing Anna.

What exactly did she do?

Rachel DeLoache Williams, a former Vanity Fair employee, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Netflix over her portrayal in the blockbuster series Inventing Anna. According to her statement, the show portrayed her as a “selfish, snobbish, disloyal, dishonest, cowardly, manipulative and opportunistic person”.

Williams’ lawyer told Vanity Fair:

“We don’t question Netflix’s right to put a lying, spongy, cowardly snob on their show, but they should have given the character a fake name and made sure no one mistook him for Rachel. Instead, her reputation was ruined because viewers thought they were witnessing Rachel’s real act.”

Netflix did not respond to a request for comment. In 2016, Rachel DeLoache Williams met Anna Sorokin and scammed her out of $62,000 for a six-night vacation in Morocco. She testified in court in 2019 with tears in her eyes about how she expected Sorokin to cover all their expenses and how the fraud and unexpected debt caused her worry and anxiety.

Williams revealed her version of the story in the book My Friend Anna, but refused to participate in the Netflix series. She later accused the corporation of “public relations for a con.” Her complaint, filed on Monday, August 29, 2022, states:

“As a result of Netflix’s misrepresentation of her as a horrible and despicable person, Williams has been subjected to, among other things, a flood of online abuse, unfavorable personal contact and derogatory characterizations in podcasts.”
