Rachel McAdams on Why She Wasn’t in Mean Girls Walmart Commercial: ‘Didn’t Know Everyone’ Participated

Rachel McAdams explains why she didn’t join the recent one Mean girls a gathering of actors that everyone agreed on so reach.

In an interview with Diversity published on Wednesday, Are you there God? I’m Margaret star commented on a Walmart ad that brought back Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert and more as their characters from Tina Fey’s 2004 film. Mean girls.

“I guess I wasn’t that excited to do the commercial, to be completely honest,” McAdams, 45, told the news outlet. “I’ve never done commercials and it just didn’t feel like a bag.”

She added that she “didn’t know everyone” — including Lohan, Seyfried and Chabert as her “Plastics” co-stars — was participating in the ad.

“Of course, I would always love to be a part of it Mean girls reuniting and hanging out with my plastic,” the actress continued. “But yes, I found that out later.”

Commercial mixes showing holiday deals at Walmart with iconic Mean girls scenes and began airing on November 1. It offers glimpses of beloved North Shore High School characters as adults, including Cady Heron (Lohan) as a counselor, Gretchen Wieners (Chabert) as a poor acting mom, and Karen Smith (Seyfried) continuing her career as a clueless weather reporter. Kevin Gnapoor (Rajiv Surendra) and Damian (Daniel Franzese) also appear in the ad.

“It was so nice to be together again after all these years,” Lohan told PEOPLE exclusively about being on another set with her former co-stars. “It was great catching up with everyone.”

“It was wonderful to spend the day with Amanda and Lindsay,” Chabert said. “It was so much fun reminiscing and being together again.”

McAdams — who played queen bee Regina George in Mark Waters’ hit film — said Diversity that while the commercial wasn’t up her alley, “the movie sounded great.” When asked if she made a cameo in the upcoming Mean girls movie musical, McAdams said she and Fey did not record any.

“Tina and I were messing around with a few ideas, but it was difficult to make it all work in the end,” she said. “I was really angry at what she wanted to do.”

Of the new adaptation of the Broadway musical, she added, “I think the direction it’s going in is going to be fantastic and I can’t wait to see it.”
