Emery rose to fame as a late-night disc jockey on WSM in Nashville. Emery’s country music programming could be heard throughout much of the eastern and central United States—and by many long-haul truck drivers, who often listened to country music—thanks to the station’s clear channel reach at night. The all-nighter was a haven for country music acts of all stripes, many of whom Emery knew personally.
He is credited with helping shape the broadcasting style of NASCAR driver (and Kentucky native) Darrell Waltrip, who was a regular guest on his late-night radio show during his early racing days in Nashville. This ultimately led to supplemental work on WSM and Nashville Now. Waltrip specifically credited Emery with establishing his approach to broadcasting, including hosting a sports broadcast comparable to hosting a chat show in his book (2002) and in a post-retirement press conference (2019).

Emery rose to prominence on Nashville Now, where his rich voice and easy rapport with guests helped make the program a national sensation. Over the course of numerous seasons, he interviewed a wide variety of country music singers from various eras, and also used a Muppet-like ‘co-host’, “Shotgun Red”. Emery attempted to return to television in 2001 with a program called Mornings with Ralph Emery on Nashville Fox station WZTV, but lasted only seven days before being kicked out, first due to continued coverage of the 9/11 attacks and then due to illness. The program was renamed Tennessee Mornings under the new host, Charlie Chase. In October 2005, Emery created The Nashville Show, a free weekly webcast co-hosted by Shotgun Red.
In mid-2007, he returned to television on the RFD-TV cable network, giving interviews on Ralph Emery Live. Every Monday night at 7:00 PM Eastern, the program airs live. The program ran for eight years, eventually changing its name to Memories of Ralph Emery, and ended in October 2015.
